The house is lovely, great setting and views. Very well equipped and spacious. We wish we could have stayed longer. Plenty of room for two couples even with kids. We loved soaking in the deep bathtubs after long hikes and biking.

Our family of five thoroughly enjoyed our our 5 day visit and could have easily stayed much longer. There is so much to see within easy driving distance, from gorgeous medieval villages like Domme and Sarlat, to prehistoric cave art to castles. La Roque Gageac is just an easy stroll down the hill and has some good restaurants and plenty of boating options. A kayak or canoe trip down the beautiful Dordogne river is a must! But the best part of this house is truly the amazing scene from the terrace. We had the perfect view of town and castle and river. We could also see the hillside town of Domme in the distance and hot air balloons were always floating nearby. A truly magical spot!

We stayed at David's property just as summer was coming to an end, and it was the perfect base for a great family vacation. It has lots of private space and facilities for three couples, but also great areas for socialising - the deck overlooking the river was the location for a number of very enjoyable wine and cheese sessions!. The kitchen was generous by French standards, and everything in the house was clean and functional.

La Roque itself has some very good restaurants and a little patisserie for the odd treat, and everything else you need - from sightseeing to biking or canoeing on the river - is very accessible, making the house at La Malatrie a great base if you are looking to mix a bit of spacious relaxation with some vacation activities in a very special area of France. No 1 La Malartrie sits on the side of the cliff a five minute walk from the village of La Roque Gageac. Having arrived by car after a long drive, the climb up the track from the allocated parking space with the family's luggage, who had packed enough for a three month visit, despite the fact we were staying for 10 days, was a little daunting. Once installed however, we marvelled at the views over the river and the village. The weather was such that we spent most of our time, when at the house, out on the terrace. Canoeing, swimming in the river, medieval villages, castles, caves, walking, fantastic weather, good food, good wine and a lovely house to stay in, all added up to make it a fantastic holiday. David was staying nearby and very kindly came to check that we had everything we needed for our stay, offering assistance and information on the area, if required. We will return one day.

Greatest view possible! Would go back immediately. Well located to discover the Dordogne region.

The home is a wonderful old cottage with beamed ceilings, lovely old traditional farm house kitchen, and sits above and overlooks the Dordogne River! Every evening we sat on the patio and watched the river float by. It's a quick walk into town for dinner and shopping. I highly recommend this home and location for exploring the area. Quite beautiful!

My husband and I and another couple were greatly impressed with La Malatrie #1. The accommodations were excellent! We loved sitting on the beautiful covered deck each day. What a gorgeous view we had! We appreciated all of the excellent advice we received from the owners as to all of the possible activities we could engage in during our stay. There is so much available to do in the beautiful Dordogne region. We enjoyed exploring the region by foot and by car. It seems like there was a picture perfect view from every angle. David and Lorna, the owners, were so gracious and a delight to meet. We highly recommend staying at their lovely home.

Myself, my wife and our two 'kids' (aged 26 and 22) spent 10 very enjoyable days here and we were all sad to leave at the end. The property was very spacious and well equipped and enabled us to fully relax. The highlight has got to be the covered terrace overlooking the river. We ate breakfast there every morning and usually finished our day off there as well, drinking wine, chatting and watching the world go by including hot air balloons most evenings.

Dave the owner popped in a few times to ensure we settled in OK and his hints and tips on what to do locally were very useful. We had great days out canoeing, cycling, and visiting nearby villages and châteaus. We only ventured further than 10 miles away on two occasions as there was so much to do in the locality. The nearby village of Roque Gageac was a gentle 10 minute walk where it was easy to find good food(and ice creams) in one of several bars and restaurants, as well as a good supply of croissants for breakfast every day!

Overall I would thoroughly recommend this property for any family that wants to relax but have activities on their doorstep. It really is in a picture postcard location!

It would be hard not to like LaRoque-Gageac and were sure we had the very best house in the entire village! La Malartrie is indeed a lovely house with stunning views and we spent an inordinate amount of our time sitting on the covered terrace taking in the beauty of the Dordogne. From our vantage point above the Dordogne we watched canoes, gabares, ducks, river otter and even a deer in the river.

Excellent information about the house and nearby sights and activities was provided by the owner prior to our arrival--and everything was exactly as described, if not better. The house was roomy, comfortable, clean, and well lit. There were books to read and a television to watch--but we never had the time for either.

The very personable owners, David and Lorna Fulton, stopped in once or twice and were happy to answer questions, suggest places to visit, etc . We did telephone concerning a noisy plumbing problem in one of the bathrooms and it was promptly attended to. The spacious, well-equipped kitchen drew nothing but compliments from our group of six women--and that's not been the case in some of our prior rentals.

The feeling was unanimous: all six of us would unhesitatingly recommend La Malartrie to someone visiting anywhere near the Dordogne area.

We shared La Mirador with another couple for 5 nights during our two week visit to France this May. Lorna and David are friendly, warm hosts, with lots of tips about the area. We can’t wait to return to visit more villages, eat more incredible food and see more cave art. We considered emailing our grown children in the US to tell them we were not coming home- and they were welcome to book a flight and visit us- that’s how special this area of France became to us! We easily entertained one another on the two terraces – watching the river, kayakers, deer swimming, and hot air balloons pass by- but we got up and out because there is so much to see and do. A car is a must and it allows you to see the countryside and have a truly French experience. We visited in May when wisteria, lilacs, calla lilies and red poppies were blooming in the fields and successfully avoided the summer crowds that flock to this family friendly, gorgeous area. Stay at least five nights and expect to do lots of walking and climbing in these charming medieval towns perched on mountaintops with incredible views. From La Mirador, it is a pleasant walk, off the main street, into the town of La Rocque despite the distance implied in photographs. La Belle Etoile provided 5 star dining experiences at extremely reasonable prices compared to the USA. The town, bakery and shops are charming. We traveled to Cena, with its fun small market, Domme, with beautiful stone buildings and a breath-taking view, Beynac and its’ feudal castle, Castlenaud, another castle and museum, the Jardins du Marqueyssac, Sarlat- with an incredible market day, kayaked from Cena to Beynac and snagged the last 4 tickets of the day which permitted us to take an English speaking tour to see the 10 to 25,000 year old cave art in Grotte Font du Gaume. The cave is just outside the one street town of Les-Elysies de-Tayac where the wonderful National Museum of Prehistory is located. Fois gras, baguettes, strawberries, white asparagus, eggs, crepes, walnuts, cheese and wine equal paradise. We missed eating tarte tatin and drinking noisette- another reason to return!
