Civray is a commune in the Vienne department in the Poitou-Charentes region in western France. It’s positioned on the banks of the Charente and has been a busy centre of commerce since Roman times. The town is built around the Romanesque church of Saint-Nicolas, which was built in the 12th Century. The façade of the church has many sculptures, including the impressive and ‘Wise and Foolish Virgins’ - well worth seeing when renting a holiday gite or villa in Civray, France.

The old part of the town boasts numerous buildings worth visiting when you rent Civray self-catering holiday accommodation. They are all testimony to the administrative importance of Civray in pre-Revolutionary times.  The impressive l'Hôtel de la Prévôté, on the tourist route, is an example of such a building.  

When you holiday in Civray you can also enjoy a panoramic view of the town and church from the ruins of the fortified castle. Civray also has several interesting paths along the Charente river. Be sure to stock up on delicious local produce at the markets on Tuesdays and Fridays, there is a fair the first Tuesday of each month – another reason to stay in a Civray rental villa!

The town is close to picturesque gardens such as that at Parc de La Belle, which has around 20,000 plants over a 10 acre site, and the opportunity to spend a night in a cabane (treehouse).  Le Jardin de Faisans is a flower garden and animal attraction, with 40 species of pheasant.  Le Jardin de Rocaille is a rock garden with 800 plant varieties over a 4,000m2 site.  

Travelling to your holiday rental property in Civray, France: The town is on the D148 which provides access to the major route N10 to the west, carrying traffic between Angouleme (70km) and Poitiers (64km).  Civray is situated close to the borders with both Charente (to the south) and Deux Sevres (to the west).  There is no rail link in Civray, and the closest is at Ruffec (16km), where both TER and TGV services are available.  The nearest commercial airport is at Angouleme-Cognac (65km), but Poitiers Biard (67km) also offers seasonal services to the UK. 

Climate here is maritime, and therefore temperate with clearly defined seasons. Average summer temperatures are between 23C to 26C (11C-13C low), and in winter this drops to 8C to 9C (2C to 3C low).  Wettest month is October with an average of 54mm, and driest is March with around 26mm.  Civray is within an area that receives over 2000 hours of sunshine per year.
