Colombiers Holiday Houses and Gites - Villas Colombiers

Colombiers is situated in the Herault department in the Languedoc-Roussillon region of Southern France. The Herault department is a real gem – a world away from the commercial crowds who are enticed by the Cote D’Azur. Yet this destination also offers sunshine, sand and the best of the South of France. When you stay in a Colombiers holiday rental house or villa you’ll discover a department that’s geographically diverse. There are beaches in the south, the stunning Cévennes mountains in the north, and agricultural land in between.

Colombiers itself is a village typical of those in this beautiful region. It also has the advantage of being close to the historical town of Beziers not to mention the Canal du Midi and its famous staircase of nine locks is found nearby!

A visit to Colombiers offers up the richness of France’s flora and fauna at it’s very best: you’ll find gorges, scrubland, limestone cirques, forests, endless beaches, the university city of Montpellier - and of course acres and acres of vineyards in France’s largest wine growing region.

Others things to do when you rent self-catering holiday accommodation in Colombiers, France include: La plaine des Dinosaures - in 1996, the largest discovery of dinosaur eggs in Europe was found at what has become an open-air dinosaur park. There is also Grotte de Clamouse - this is one of the most impressive caves in the area. St-Guilhem-le-Désert is nearby and merits a visit – not least because it’s often voted the prettiest village in France, with its abbey and pottery shops.

The artist Moliere's town of Pezenas is another interesting excursion well worth exploring when you stay in a Colombiers holiday rental gite. It has charm aplenty with brocantes, antique shops and traditional narrow, colourful streets - largely unchanged since Moliere's times. Be sure also to try one of the many seafood restaurants in the port of Meze, or visit the Musee de L'Etang de Thau at nearby Bouzigues to find out more about breeding shellfish.

Colombiers is easily reached via the airport at nearby Béziers. Ryanair offer flights to and from the UK – check for seasonal variations in departures. The nearest  train station is also at Béziers. Trains to Paris Gare du Lyon take approximately 5 ½ - 6 hours and necessitate a change depending on your departure time. If you prefer to take the ferry and then drive - from Bilbao allow just under 6 hours. From the north of France and Calais – allow 10 hours (note these journey times are without breaks!).

The average daytime temperature is around 25-30 degrees Celsius in July and August and 8-10 degrees Celsius in December and January.
