Montreuil-sur-Mer is found in the Pas-de-Calais department of the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region in northern France. It is located on the Canche river, not far from Étaples; it’s actually 10 miles inland from the sea. When you stay in a holiday cottage in Montreuil sur Mer do visit the 11th century Abbey of Saint-Saulve. The Abbey is significant for its blend of Romanesque and gothic architecture which form one of the most beautiful ensembles of northern France.  In the same square is the Chapelle de l’Hotel-Dieu, founded in 1200 by Gauthier de Maintenay and which retained its function as part of the hospital until 1992.  Reconstructed under Napoleon the Third, this was followed by a restoration by Clovis Normand which only retained the flamboyant gateway of the 15th century.

Flights to nearby Le Touquet are available from Lydd Air who fly from Lydd airport near Ashford in Kent.  Alternatively if travelling to France via Eurotunnel then Montreuil-sur-Mer is an approximate 50 minute drive.
