Montreuil-sur-Mer is found in the Pas-de-Calais department of the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region in northern France. It is located on the Canche river, not far from Étaples; it’s actually 10 miles inland from the sea. The Abbey is significant for its blend of Romanesque and gothic architecture which form one of the most beautiful ensembles of northern France.  In the same square is the Chapelle de l’Hotel-Dieu, founded in 1200 by Gauthier de Maintenay and which retained its function as part of the hospital until 1992.  Reconstructed under Napoleon the Third, this was followed by a restoration by Clovis Normand which only retained the flamboyant gateway of the 15th century.
