Self Catering Aups Holiday Homes, Villas and Gites to Rent

Aups is a stunning hill top village in the Var department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in southeastern France. Located at 500m, Aups is found in the foothills of the Alps. The town is at the gates of Verdon River, at 60 km from the sea and 80 km from the snow stations. When you rent a holiday home in Aups take advantage of its typically Mediterranean climate which is reputed to make the village an exceptionally healthy place to live. A visit to Aups means you are also visiting the Capital of Haut-Var –the village has also been integrated into the impressive Parc naturel régional du Verdon since 2000.

Most everyone in France knows Aups not just for being yet another stunning hilltop Provencal village – but for being something else (in their eyes!) far more impressive: Aups is the truffle capital of the Var. The highly prized fungus is harvested locally by trained truffle hounds and eagerly sought by all the chefs of the region. When you stay in an Aups Holiday Giteyou’ll soon become aware of the importance the humble truffle plays in the local livelihood. Aups is the third largest black truffle market of France, known for its quality and importance. This intoxicating market is held every Thursday from November to February – it’s worth watching how this precious fungi is sold!

When you stay in self catering accommodation in Aups be sure to visit the colourful Provençal market - every Wednesday and Saturday featuring local products and handicrafts.

The village itself is also of interest besides markets and truffles! In a pretty setting on the edge of a plateau, with the remains of a medieval castle standing above the village, Aups is a pleasure to explore with every corner in the narrow streets revealing new fountains and sundials, small squares and enticing cafes.

Most of the main sights are found near the small 19th century Chapel Notre Dame de la Délivrance, built on the site of an earlier castle. These include a clock tower with a campanile. There are also some interesting paintings in the Simon Segal Museum – which is situated in a pretty old convent building (12th century).

To get ot your Aups Holiday Villa: The closest airport to Aups is Toulon Airport (58 km) – Ryanair is the only carrier operating out of this airport. Also within reach are Nice  (79 km) and Marseille Airports (84 km). All of the low cost and scheduled airlines operate flights into and out of these very busy French airports year round. From France’s northern ferry ports and the Eurotunnel it’s a 10 ½ drive – without breaks.

The Provence Alpes Côte d’Azur region is renowned for its hot temperatures and pleasant climate throughout the year and especially for its sunny and dry weather during the summer months. The region benefits from 2835.5 sunshine hours a year and is the hottest place of France.
