Josselin is found in the Morbihan department in the Brittany region of north-western France. Josselin is perched on the river Oust, boasts a delightful château, there’s even an excellent town square that offers many restaurants and cafes overlooking the Basilica de Notre Dame du Roncier.

When renting a Josselin holiday home you’re entering a place rich in history. It is famous for its chateau and also its place in history as a stronghold of the House of Rohan. In 1351, during the Breton War of Succession (part of the Hundred Years' War), two groups of English knights and Franco-Breton knights staged an arranged combat at a spot halfway between the Chateau de Josselin and Ploërmel. The Castle of Josselin can still be seen today, although only four of the original nine towers remain after the Cardinal Richelieu ordered the castle partially demolished in 1629. Originally built in the 11th century and rebuilt at various times since – today it is now designated as a monument historique. The Castle is still a residence of Josselin de Rohan, fourteenth Duke of Rohan, who was President of the region of Brittany from 1998 to 2004.

The Nantes to Brest canal runs through the town and is ideal for cycling along the towpath. The Lac du Duc near Ploermel offers swimming with a man made beach and water sports. Roscoff and St-Malo are the nearest ferry ports. Roscoff serves Brittany Ferries from Plymouth and Cork and Irish Ferries from Rosslare. St Malo welcomes Brittany Ferries from Portsmouth and Condor Ferries form Weymouth, Poole, Guernsey and Jersey. The nearest train station is at Loudéac. Travel time to Paris Montparnasse is approximately 4 ½ hours, there is a change at St Brieuc.

Brittany is warmer and drier than the south of England, particularly in summer. The south coast of Brittany can be scorching in July and August. However, being in the north west of France, the weather can also set be wet at any time of the year.
