Vannes Holiday Rental Cottages, Houses and Villas in Brittany

Vannes is found in the Morbihan department in the Brittany region of north-western France. Founded over 2000 years ago, Vannes is a pleasant town situated on the edge of the incredible Golfe du Morbihan, an inland sea and sailing metropolis, famous for its oyster farms. When you rent a holiday home in Vannes you’re also located at the mouth of two rivers, the Marle and the Vincin. A visit to Vannes is also the chance to stay in a lively bustling market town.

When you stay in Vannes self catering holiday cottages there is plenty to see and do. Sights include the incredible St. Peter's Cathedral (Cathédrale Saint-Pierre de Vannes), which also carries the title Basilica. It is the seat of the Bishops of Vannes. Interestingly, in the novels of Alexandre Dumas, the musketeer Aramis appears at one point as Bishop of Vannes and logically must have served in this very cathedral.

The present Gothic building was erected on the site of the former Romanesque cathedral. Its construction extends from the 15th to the 19th centuries. If the existence of the 13th century Romanesque bell tower is included - then it’s a total of seven centuries of construction.

Other places to visit include: Church of St Patern, classic church, Chapel of Saint-Yves, baroque church, Château Gaillard (medieval house now used as an archaeological museum), Musée de la Cohue (fine arts museum), Château de l'Hermine (former castle, transformed into a palace in the 17th century) and of course the harbour.

The Vannes aquarium is worth a trip when you stay in a Vannes holiday rental villa.  Also of interest is the Musée des Automates (19th century mechanical toys) and la Papillonneraie (Butterfly house).  At the end of July the town celebrates its Jazz Festival.
