Two charming holiday gites situated just off the road between St Denis Catus and Catus, just north of Cahors. GRANGE SLEEPS 6 PEOPLE.

Named after the ancient village which originally stood here, the gites for rent are the only surviving structures from that earlier time. Bégot stands in 9 Hectares (22.5 acres) on a hill - with wonderful views across the local countryside. The location of the gites affords privacy without isolation.

The gites consist of a three double-bedroomed grange (barn) and a one double-bedroomed fournil (bakery). Both the grange and the fournil have comfortable living rooms and lots of exterior space where the sun can be taken and meals can be enjoyed. Both gites are centrally heated and so can be rented throughout the year (this region is famous for its "indian summers" up to November. January to March is the best time to sample the local truffles).

The accommodation is suitable for parties of up to eight (six people in the barn and two people in the bread oven).

Both gites have full cooking facilities and are comfortably furnished. There is a swimming pool (filtered and solar heated). The grounds offer very pleasant rural surroundings but with easy access to all local amenities. Use of all facilities is shared with the owners.

Situated just off the road between St Denis Catus and Catus, just north of Cahors, it is 15 minutes drive from the motorway. Paris is 574 km, Bordeaux 217 km, Montpellier 230 km and Barcelona 506 km. The journey by car is around 6 hours from Paris and 4 hours from St Malo (assuming reasonable rest-breaks and no major traffic hold ups).

The train station is 20 minutes away by car and is just 5 hours from Paris (SNCF). Bergerac Airport (served by RyanAir from Stansted Airport ) is just an hour by car. Toulouse Airport is around 90 minutes away (British Airways or EasyJet from Heathrow or Gatwick) and Rodez about 1 hours (RyanAir from Stansted). Brive, Vallee de la Dordogne Airport is just 30 minutes by car and is also accessible by train (Nearest station Souillac with services to Cahors). Flights to London City are operated by City Jet (www.cityjet.com) and Airlinair to Paris, Orly (www.airlinair.com)

The owners (Gilbert & Brigitte Monier) live on site in a traditional stone-built farmhouse (below) in the typical Quercy style with a prominent pigeonnier (dove cote) and are on hand for advice on how to best enjoy the area.

Local Attractions

St Denis Catus is just 1 km away, standing on the river Vert. It is a mostly residential village with few shopping facilities.

The Village of Catus (3kms) has a bar, a small supermarket, a pharmacy, a newsagent (with English newspapers) a Post Office, butcher/charcuterie, a baker/boulangerie and a local tourist office. There is a friendly atmosphere in Catus and a visit is highly recommended on market day (Tuesday morning) or during the village fete (mid-July). Just beyond Catus is Lake Vert, with restaurants and a variety of water-related activities.

Between Catus and Cahors is the village of Mercues with its beautiful and imposing chateau. Besides wine production, the chateau is operated as an hotel and restaurant. There are many wine producing chateaux in the immediate vicinity and most offer free tastings, so you can choose your preferred vignoble and vintage. Within the same small area you can also find many farms offering local specialities - particularly pate de foie gras.

Duelle (to Mercues, then between the vineyards and across the River Lot - about 15 mins by road) is a lovely traditional town with bars and restaurants by the river. There are many such villages situated along the banks of the River Lot.

The village of St. Cirq La Popie is 20 minutes from Cahors and must be seen. Set on a hill high above the River Lot, St. Cirq La Popie has a rich history.
