BEYNAC

It is a medieval construction, austere, perched on the top of a limestone cliff overlooking the village on the right bank of the Dordogne. The castle has the form of an irregular quadrilateral extended to the south by a spur bastion. The severe dungeon, filled with battlements, dates from the thirteenth century. Protected on the side of the plateau by a double enclosure, the castle overlooks the Dordogne from 150 m (source Wikipedia). Beynac is the most authentic castle in the Périgord region. Dating back to the 12th century, former fortress of Richard the Lionheart, it overlooks the Dordogne valley. A unique situation that makes it one of the most beautiful castles of Périgord: hanging 150 meters above the valley of the 5 castles, it dominates a magnificent landscape that one discovers between heaven and earth from the heights of the dungeon.

CASTELNAUD THE CHAPEL

Located at the confluence of the Dordogne valley and the Céou valley that it overlooks, Castelnaud Castle faces the fortress of Beynac, its eternal medieval rival, the gardens of Marqueyssac and the village of RoqueGageac. An exceptional example of feudal private for- fication, its architectural component is rational and effective: the dungeon straddling the enclosure with a spur-like pro fi le protects the main entrance; With many archers, this curtain is part of a powerful defensive system succeeding two defensive lines. Inaugurated in 1985, the museum of the war in the Middle Ages invests the rooms of the seigniorial lodge. 250 pieces of weapons from the 13th to the 18th century, from Europe (swords, halberds, armor, crossbows, artillery pieces), reconstructions of siege engines and a set of furniture constitute the collection of the museum. The park of the Château de Marqueyssac, classified site, is a private domain, born from the history of a family dating back to the seventeenth century Marqueyssac is one of the most beautiful achievements of the romantic gardens of the nineteenth century.
