Les Hauts de Marteilles is a small collection of privately owned houses, set in maintained gardens with mature trees set in the beautiful north Dordogne countryside between Verteillac and San Severin. There are two available gites to chose from adjacent to each other, both can accommodate 4 people, and they can be booked separately or together for friends wishing to holiday together.

Each gite has one double bedroom with an en suite shower room, and one twin bedroom with a separate family bathroom.  Both have a  lounge with a small corner kitchen, fully equipped with electric hob, microwave, oven, dishwasher, fridge freezer, and all utensils required for your needs together with a clothes washing machine. There is a table and four chairs, a settee, and two armchairs, UK TV freeview channels and a WiFi are available, and all linen, sheets, hand and bath towels are provided within the weekly rental price. Pool towels are not provided but can be supplied at extra cost if required,

Outside each gite there is a small private patio with table and chairs, a portable BBQ, and sun beds are also supplied.  The pool is 10 x 5 metres, is surrounded by a child proof fence, and is shared by other guests and owners.

The small complex of buildings containing these gites is set in a quiet, private garden of mature trees with  lawned areas and flower beds There is a shared boule alley, and woods to explore, and a shared parking area on site.  The nearest main village is approximately 5 kilometers away with a small supermarket, butcher, baker, bank, and restaurants which can provide all your day to day needs for food. Hairdressers, information centres cafes, restaurants etc are all within easy reach to enable you to have a relaxed and enjoyable holiday in France. Weekly food markets selling locally grown produce, fruit and vegetables, and other goods can be found in many local villages, and an excellent market within a short trip to nearby Riberac and also in Mareuil.  Full details will be available in thegite on your arrival.

Activities available in the area include canoeing, horse riding, archery, paint ball, skeet shooting, and golf.  Also during summer there are wonderful night markets in the nearby villages, and in Verteillac every first Sunday of the month, all year round, there is an amazing brocante market.  Smaller vide grenier markets are also a main feature of this region.

For wine lovers, the local wines are excellent and range from sweet white wines, like Monbazillac, to Roses, and deep Reds from the world famous Bordeaux and Bergerac regions.  Cognac and pineau are also locally produced and visits to the vintners for "degustation " are offered everywhere.

This is a region with a history of Roman occupancy and Gothic architecture, rich in culture and tradition, and there is a strong influence of this seen in the churches and ancient surviving structures and buildings. The ancient language here was Occitane, one of the seven languages of the Langue D'Oc regions which include Catalonia in Spain and the south east regions of France occupied by the Cathars during the crusades. The history is fascinating and more information can be found locally in the libraries if desired.

A monolithic church can be found at Aubeterre, hewn straight from the rock and totally hidden until found during fairly recent times, and there are Roman building remains in Periguex to be visited and admired. A rich cultural experience awaits.
