A great holiday
A lovely quiet holiday home in a very rural area, but within easy reach of restaurants and supermarkets. The Gite had a stunning view of the surrounding countryside, and for most of the time the only sounds were the birds and insects. At night it was quiet and you could sit out watching the stars with no intrusive lights. The accommodation was absolutely fine, with all the facilities you could need, and very comfortable. We ate in and used restaurants in Najac and Villefranche, both only 15 minutes away by car. There is a supermarket only 5 minutes up the road, and Villefranche has everything you could need. We visited some of the cave sites north of here, and also found numerous prehistoric dolmen sites from the maps, and have fallen in love with the Bastides, so this proved to be a brilliant base for our adventures.

Fantastic house in the beautiful Aveyron
We spent 2 weeks in Oubax & had a wonderful holiday. The house is lovely, very comfortable & certainly has the best equipped kitchen of any rental property I’ve ever stayed in. We didn’t use the TV but it was available with English & French stations & the WiFi was excellent inside & out.

The terrace, garden & pool overlook beautiful countryside which was everchanging during our visit as the farmers harvested their fields.

Although rural, shopping facilities are within easy driving distance, & there are plenty of restaurants to suit all tastes. The area has many great markets selling such fabulous fresh produce that you want to buy everything & take it back to the house & start cooking.

As well as visiting the markets, beautiful bastides & the rivers, it’s a great area for crafts - we visited a number of artisan potters & jewellery makers & watched them at work before buying.

I would highly recommend Les Portails to anyone looking to visit this region of France. It makes an excellent base for exploring but is also perfect for staying put. It’s such a good place to relax, have a swim, cook local produce, drink local wine & eat on the terrace looking out at the countryside. After all of that you sit for hours and stargaze.

Perfect.

Beautiful and tranquil setting, large garden and pool. Interior a bit dated and lots of flies
The house is in a gorgeous and tranquil setting with lovely views across the garden and valley beyond. There is a lovely big garden with a nice (unheated) pool. There were lots of kids toys available which was perfect for our 2 year old. There were bikes which we used to cycle the pretty local roads (which were quite hilly, but I liked that...!)

The kitchen in the house had everything you needed and all the appliances worked well. There wasnt a lot of space in the kitchen and lots of the rooms were very dark and a bit dingy and the decor was dated. This property is best enjoyed when you want to spend time outside. There were also lots and lots of flies which was a bit annoying sometimes.

There were also a lot of rules and requirements for guests which in other houses we've been to have been done for you such as uncovering the pool, getting all the garden furniture out, cleaning the house etc but as long as you are happy to do that then its not problem.

Overall i would recommend this house.

We spent two weeks in Oubax and liked it very much. The house is well off the beaten track and surrounded by beautiful countryside. The garden and pool are great and there is more than enough space to park your car and bikes. The kitchen is well equipped but lacks storage space and could do with a bigger bin (you have to separate your waste and have at least two bin bags at the same time but only one small bin). The sitting room upstairs feels a bit dated.

Thelma and John are very nice hosts and were always quick to answer emails. There is a lot to do and see nearby and we managed to rent mountain bikes for the time from the tourist information in Villefranche (delivered to the house).

OUR FAVOURITE HOLIDAY PROPERTY IN FRANCE
We have stayed at Les Portails several times, and have always loved it. As soon as one drives through the gates, one enters a beautiful, private and tranquil setting with stunning views. The house is full of character, spacious and comfortable. Lovely garden and swimming pool. Well worth reading the owners' book with up to date information on all the beautiful towns, villages and activities and restaurants in the area. Our favourite restaurant is Oustal del Barry in Najac, where we again enjoyed a superb dinner. For those who like to barbecue or cook (in the modern kitchen), Villefranche in particular has a wonderful Thursday market and excellent specialist food shops as well as supermarkets.

We played golf at the excellent course in Albi, and during this stay also visited Millau to see the spectacular, world-famous viaduct.

The house and location represent rural France at its best, and we look forward to staying there again.

Peaceful rural holiday home
The description on Owners Direct is fully accurate: a large farmhouse with modern kitchen and bathrooms, well-equipped and ideal for one or more families. The location is quiet and there is a large pool in the huge garden with views over the countryside. Supermarkets etc are within a short drive, as are many charming and interesting market towns & villages. The owners provide comprehensive information and advice for guests, with suggestions for eating out. Internet wifi is included. We had a lovely holiday and have no hesitation in recommending it to others. Alan & Sue Taylor, Lincolnshire.

Lovely fortnight in our favourite part of France

Nice house in rural location. Lovely pool (with less lovely cover!) And garden with v beautiful views.

Well equipped kitchen though not much space to stow provisions outside the fridge.

Comfy beds. Very clean. Older property.

Good value for money. Excellent customer care and good communication from helpful owners.

We had a great time.

Great holiday home in the lovely French countryside
We had a lovely holiday. The house is situated amongst very pretty countryside. All facilities in the house were great, including the pool. The house was very clean. Bakery is within five minutes drive, supermarket and another super bakery is 10-15mins drive. Lovely towns and villages to visit. Would recommend.

Charming house in a lovely spot.
We loved every moment of our stay in this charming house. The pool is fantastic and completely private.

The surrounding countryside is absolutely stunning and nowhere near as crowded or touristy as the Dordogne.

We found lots to do in the area to keep adults and kids fully amused. The highlight for all of us was canoeing on the River Aveyron.
