The spacious newly converted gite nestles at one end of a beautiful granite barn. It offers open plan living, two bedrooms and two shower rooms, terrace and garden. Set in 25 acres of pasture and secluded woodlands offering a tranquil retreat and a haven for wildlife. This stunning undulating landscape, with warm lakes, miles of empty roads and paths is perfect for a relaxing or more active outdoor holiday.

Situated in the undiscovered region of Corrèze on the western edge of the Massif Central in France we are surrounded by the rivers, lakes and forests of the ‘Parc naturel régional de Millevaches en Limousin’. Traversed by a huge network of tracks and pathways, the moorlands, meadows, woodlands and rivers remain unspoilt.

ACCOMMODATION:

Kitchen and dining:

The glass front door opens into the spacious open plan, triple aspect living room with vaulted cathedral ceiling. Stairs lead up to a mezzanine.

There is a new fitted kitchen and spacious dining area. The kitchen has all modern appliances including a SMEG electric oven and gas hob with extractor hood, an American-style refrigerator with large fridge and freezing sections which provide cold water and ice cubes on request, an integrated dishwasher and washing machine and a Nespresso coffee-machine which works with all ‘Nespresso’ or compatible pods. Ample cupboards and a huge oak dresser hold a range of good quality kitchen equipment and white Limoges porcelain.

The enormous monastery style oak table separates the kitchen from the living area. Oak chairs ensure there is plenty of room should you choose to eat inside.

A highchair can be provided on request.

Living rooms:

With the kitchen and dining area on one side, the rest of the room is taken up with a huge, gloriously comfortable, squashy sofa seating four and two large comfy armchairs.

There is a tv with English ‘Freesat’, a dvd player with a selection of DVD's and a music tower with iPhone docking / Bluetooth. English sockets are available for charging phones and cameras etc. A bookcase holds a selection of books and maps and guides.

Views are to the south and west through the bi-fold doors leading to the terrace and beyond to the setting sun.

Open metal and oak stairs lead to the mezzanine level.

Bedrooms:

There are two bedrooms, one leading from the living area under the mezzanine and the other up on the mezzanine level, accessed via the stairs.

Each room is simply furnished, showing off the original features. In each room there is a double and a single bed, with bedside tables and lamps. All beds have high quality English mattresses.

If the room is not required as a twin room the single bed is made up as a sofa – an ideal place to lie and read! The beds are fully made up with quality duvets, pillows and linen. Additional blankets are available in cooler months.
There is ample storage including hanging space and plenty of sockets. A hairdryer is provided in each room

A travelcot can be provided on request.

Bathrooms:

There are two shower rooms, one opposite the bedroom and one en-suite up on the mezzanine. Each has a Hansgrohe shower with glass screen, toilet and hand basin. A heated towel rail ensures warm fluffy towels!
Quality towels and shower mats are provided.

Garden and outside:

The large paved terrace is accessed from inside through the bi-fold doors or from outside. There are ample deck chairs, wooden chairs and a table on the terrace and a parasol for shade. A washing line, clothes airer and pegs are available in the garden. There is a courtyard garden accessed by steps from the terrace. This leads out into the field.

You are more than welcome to use the field, either to stroll around or to sit under any of the huge trees, which offer ample shade at the height of the day. Marked paths lead round the woods and you are welcome to wander through them. There are both Douglas Fir which is grown as a crop, and ancient mixed deciduous woodland; oak, hazel, chestnut and beech. The clean air ensures a huge variety of mosses and lichens and wild flowers. In summer and autumn we forage for mushrooms and we have several edible species.

There is a ‘chemin’ or track, which leads from our hamlet, past the woods and down to the lake – Lac des Barriousses.

The Area:

Treignac, ten minutes by car has a good supermarket (including fuel) two butchers and two boulangeries as well as Cafes, a chocolate shop and the Tourist Information. It is a beautiful medieval village and well worth a visit. There is a wider selection of shops at Eymoutiers twenty minutes away.

There is a local market in Treignac on Friday evening in summer and on Thursday and Saturday mornings in Eymoutiers all year round.

About us

We bought the barn in 2012 and since then have been carefully and thoughtfully converting it from a cow shed to our home and the gîte.

All the work has been completed sympathetically retaining as much of the character of the barn as possible, with the highest possible quality finishes. The granite and old oak from the barn has been re-purposed and locally sourced green oak used for all the new structural work. Like the original builders we have utilised lime-based materials for the floors, the internal walls and for all the joints. An ancient method using hemp and lime mixture provides insulation as this ‘breathes’ and lets moisture move in and out of the walls and floors. Under-floor heating throughout ensures it is comfortably warm and cosy in the cooler months.

We are as environmentally friendly as possible. Solar panels and a huge wood boiler power the heating and hot water. The logs for this come from our own woods. Our ‘potager’ and polytunnel enables us to be self sufficient in seasonal vegetables all year round. Everything biodegradable is composted. We recycle and use eco-friendly products where possible. We have installed our own septic tank and the delicious un-chlorinated water comes straight from the local spring in our commune of St Hilaire Les Courbes.

Local Attractions

Although we are in a very rural setting we are only 12 minutes by car from the pretty medieval village of Treignac. Perfect for a coffee in the square, there are shops, restaurants, the Tourist Information Office, a supermarket (with fuel) and beautiful ancient buildings.

The other part of our business here at La Grange is 'Millevaches Triathlon Holidays'. Walking/ Hiking
There are countless paths and trails, and many well-marked routes. Whilst there is no ‘open access’ here, in truth there are enough well signed paths for a lifetime! The undulating terrain and the ever-changing landscape offers interest and unexpected panoramas.
While you are here you are welcome to borrow our maps and guides.

Cycling
Whether you like road cycling, mountain biking or cyclocross there are empty roads and tracks everywhere. The roads are peaceful, and the undulating roads offer beautiful views. When you do come across a car you will find that french drivers are much more respectful of cyclists and are more likely to shout an encouraging “allez allez allez”!
Most of the paths for walking are good for off-road cycling. There are some dedicated downhill mountain bike trails. Bike hire available via ‘Station Sports Vézère’ in Treignac, and electric bike hire is available in Treignac Main Square.
Bike hire also available from BikeHireDirect Contact Joanne & David by phone on 0033 (0)6 23 69 69 35 or by e-mail hautevienne@bikehiredirect.com They deliver and collect their bikes to us.

Running
If you like to run, then the trails and paths are endless and empty.
We have maps and guides and can show you the best trails.

Swimming
Swimming is free and permitted in the 30 plus lakes in Corrèze. Warm in the summer, they are large enough to offer longer distance open water swimming.
The main tourist ‘beaches’ have a lifeguard on duty. There are supervised swimming areas for toddlers and larger areas for the more confident. Usually there is a pontoon for jumping in! At Lac de Bariousses ( five minutes by car from us) there is a giant inflatable Aqua park. See the website... http://www.sportsnature-correze.fr/treign-aqua-park

If you are prepared to walk a little, you can have your own private little beach and not see a soul! On our website there is lots of information on the 3 lakes we use regularly. You can swim freely in all the lakes as well as where there is supervised bathing.

Fishing
Fishing is popular on all the lakes and on the River Vézère and Vienne. You must have a licence, which is available locally in Treignac or you can buy it online.
