The History of the Château
The origins of the estate date back to the years following the French Revolution. In 1791, church-owned lands were nationalised and offered for sale, allowing Hyppolit Le Mercier de Pierremont to acquire approximately 300 hectares within the commune of Angerville-la-Campagne.
The estate later passed to his son-in-law, Pierre Nicolas L’Hopital, who served on the Eure Departmental Directory, became a General Councillor in 1830 and was elected Mayor of Évreux in 1848.
Inspired by the beauty of the surrounding parkland, Pierre Nicolas L’Hopital commissioned the construction of the château in 1829. Alongside the main residence, the estate included a chapel dedicated to Our Lady, a hunting lodge, stables, an orangery, kennels and a water tower. Part of the estate was also developed into a model agricultural farm.
His son, Georges L’Hopital, studied at the prestigious Lycée Henri IV in Paris before embarking on a distinguished legal and public service career. An Officer of the Legion of Honour, he served as a Councillor of State, administrator of La Nationale insurance company, District Councillor and President of the Société Libre d’Évreux.
The family's connection with the estate continued through Joseph L’Hopital, a respected writer and speaker whose literary work was recognised by the Académie Française. He also served as Mayor of Angerville-la-Campagne between 1911 and 1930.
The château remained in the ownership of the same family for almost two centuries before being sold in May 2008.
