Year round attractions
In the late spring, summer and early autumn, the valley is a perfect place for hiking, horse-riding, cycling, canoeing, fishing and tennis. Higher up, there are more challenging walks and opportunities for climbing. You can even hire donkeys or llamas to carry luggage for you on longer hikes! And the area is home to a fascinating range of flora and fauna.
There are picturesque villages to explore in every direction, as well as the lovely town of Briançon just a few minutes away. ~ click here for local tourist office This impressive fortified town (one of the highest in Europe) is a fascinating place to explore, with its quaint old streets and Vauban ramparts. The old part of town has UNESCO World Heritage status. Both the old and the new areas offer a wide range of shops and services. The Italian border is only 15 minutes’ drive away, making it easy to sample real Italian cuisine and shopping opportunities.
The nearest boulangerie is a few minutes’ drive from the house, opposite the Champ de Mars car park as you enter Briançon. A wine shop is just a couple of doors along. There are large supermarkets at the Grand Boucle near the centre of town and just off the Gap road at the southern end of Briançon, as well as twice-weekly markets in season.
