Delightful 5 bedroom home in Mielan, Gers - Set in the Gersois bastide village of Miélan, against the backdrop of the Pyrenean mountains. 
The house is situated between Tarbes and Auch, with its historic cathedral, and only 20 mins from Marciac, famous for its jazz festival.
Cycling is very popular in the area, there are wonderful châteaux abound and the famous Lourdes is a 50-min drive. Pau, Toulouse and Biarritz can be reached a little further.

The House

The property has been lovingly restored to a high standard over the last decade to provide a charming family residence. Built circa 1780 by Pierre Leglise, one of Napoleon's Generals, this Maison de Maître has been the principal residence within the bastide, and many of the building's unique, original features can still be seen.  

The kitchen is fully equipped with all modern amenities, a 6 burner gas range with a double electric oven.

The dining room, with original wooden flooring, provides increased seating for more special occasions. The house is a perfect place to relax with a sitting room with fireplace as well as a study. There are books, board games, TV, DVDs and a hifi stereo at your disposal.  Table tennis, table football and badminton are also available.

Upstairs on the first floor, there are four large double bedrooms: two ensuite doubles and two twins. Two of the rooms have south facing views of the Pyrenees. On the top floor you will find a hideaway double bedroom with views over the garden and its own private bathroom.

The house has been thoughtfully furnished with authentic English, French and Spanish antiques. Quality linen and towels are included. The laundry room boasts a tumble dryer and a washing machine.

Gardens: Coming from a family of plant professionals, the owners have given the same care and attention to the gardens as they have to the interior of the house. Both native and more unusual plants have been sourced to provide a tranquil and lush haven within the backdrop of the bicentennial cedar trees, planted to commemorate Napoleon's passing through the village towards his Iberian Peninsula campaign. There is a small orchard and plenty of shady areas for relaxation, evening drinks and comfortable dining. 

An original lean-to barn has been adapted to provide an informal space for dining, games and provides an ideal setting for larger family and friend gatherings.

The back courtyard can comfortably fit three cars. There is more on-street parking space available.


The Local Area:

The village has two bars, a convenience store, baker, butcher and newsagent. There is also a Credit Agricole Bank with a cashpoint. If you drive 15 minutes you have the larger market town of Mirande with greater choice of supermarkets.

The house is a 20 min drive from Marciac with its world famous Jazz Festival every summer. Well known artists such as Gregory Porter, Jamie Cullum and Santana regularly perform. Cultural/religious pursuits are spread around the region such as Lourdes and Auch.

There are several golf courses within easy driving distances of the house (the closest at Palanne only a 10 minute drive).

Cycling is a popular activity in the region, with the Tour de France regularly passing through the area and the village.

The Ski pistes of the Pyrenees can be reached within an hour and twenty minutes, perfect for day skiing during the winter months. Lake swimming is less than half an hour away at Lupiac or Castelnau Magnoac. Tree parks can also be found.

The Gers gastronomy continues to grow with more and more eclectic establishments emerging from Far Eastern/European fusion at Sandikala through to Michelin stared gourmet at Prés de Eugénie in Eugénie les Bains, all within an hours access.

For nature enthusiasts, the clean air and clear skies will fill your soul. Wildlife is everywhere with red squirrels in the garden, migratory Hoopoes, deer and wild boar (Sanglier). Buzzards and the occasional stork hang around the fields.
