Local Attractions
Chorges is well served for shops, bars and restaurants and is only a short walk to the bakers to buy fresh bread and croissants in the morning, There is a large and popular street market every Sunday which draws crowds from all over the area and should not be missed with stalls selling local mountain cheeses and hams, fruit and vegetables from Provence, and local wines and liqueurs. During the summer season live music and many other outdoor events take place around the village. Other facilities include a post office, a bank with ATM machine and a sports shop with ski rental in winter. There is a tourist information office located in the centre of the village. The railway station has services running between Gap and Briancon.

In summer the local bathing beach on Lac Serre-Poncon is at Bai de Chanteloube, a beautiful location with safe swimming, stunning views and plenty of places to picnic. A little further towards Embrun is Bai St Michel with the pretty Chapel of St Michel located on a small island in the bay. There are sailing/windsurfing clubs at both locations. The 'Plan d'Eau' in Embrun is a small, separate lake especially set aside for swimmers and sunbathers.

Other Activities
Summer or winter the variety of outdoor activities available in the area is almost unlimited. There are a number of professional guiding companies in the area who will be happy to introduce you to this beautiful area while at the same time providing an opportunity for you to sample some new and exciting activities. The tourist information office in Chorges (www.otchorges.com) or Embrun can put you in contact with guiding and outdoor activity companies and provide further details on all of the following activities.

Hiking - all levels, lakeside walks, mountain footpaths to Alpine pastures and pristine lakes, steeper hikes to mountain refuges, passes and summits can all be found nearby. Further in to Les Ecrins National Park there are hikes up to some of the glaciers. Long distance footpaths in the area include The Tour de Lac Serre-Poncon, The Tour de Queyras or the Tour de Les Ecrins.

Rock Climbing - all lengths and grades are available whether you want short technical sports climbs, multi-pitch granite slabs in the Ailefoide Valley or Alpine rock routes to mountain summits.

Alpine Mountaineering - whether you are interested in rock routes, snow routes of mixed conditions, Les Ecrins National Park offers some of France's highest and most challenging peaks.

Mountain Biking/VTT - is readily available with many marked trails.

Cycling – The high mountain roads and passes in this area offer many challenging routes to cycling enthusiasts. The Tour de France often passes close to Chorges and on 15th August every year, Embrun plays host to the world renowned iron man triathlon known as the “Embrun Man”

Kayaking - the Durance, the Guil and the Gyronde Rivers are all well known for white water kayaking. The Vague de Rabioux just below the village of Châteauroux, is renowned as one of the Durance's main challenges. If you are interested in taking lessons the tourist information office can help you. Or go to the kayak and rafting centre at St Clement.

White Water Rafting – for an experience not to be missed take a trip from St Clement down the river to Embrun and ride the Vague de Rabioux en route.
Dinghy Sailing and Wind Surfing - The lake of Serre-Ponçon is ideal for dinghy sailing and wind surfing. Bring your own equipment or rent from the local sailing club. Winds tend to be calm in the morning for beginners and rise in the afternoon, providing more challenging conditions. The Club Nautique Alpin at Bai de Chanteloube (www.voile-chanteloube.com ) offers recognized courses in dinghy sailing and wind surfing.

Skiing
In winter the nearest ski station is at Reallon (www.reallon-ski.com) about 20 minutes’ drive up behind Chorges. Other, larger ski stations within an hour’s drive from the apartment include Les Orres above Embrun and Rissoul/Vars above Guillestre. Puy St Vincent, Serre Chevalier and Orcieres-Merlette are just over an hour’s drive away. There are numerous small, local ski areas in the Queyras which also provide opportunities for cross country skiing making the apartment a great base from which to sample a huge variety of different ski terrains. The skiing is high, beautiful and varied, catering for all levels of experience, with splendid views of the highest peaks of the Southern Alps. Other winter activities include snow shoeing and ice diving.

Culture and History
If you would prefer to sample the history and culture of the area, the historic town of Embrun is 25 minutes by car. It is also accessible by train and has a good selection of supermarkets, shops, cafes, hotels and restaurants. Walk through Embrun's narrow Italianate streets and admire the views from the ramparts across the River Durance to the mountains beyond. The beautiful 12th Century Cathedral is also well worth a visit. Embrun's Saturday morning market is very popular.

Other places of historical interest in the area include the tranquil Abbaye de Boscoden, the Fort of Mont-Dauphin near Guillestre, Chateau Queyras near Ville-Vielle in the Queyras Regional Park and the towns of Gap, Briancon, Barcellonette and Sisteron. There are also some beautiful circular drives which take in many of these places: for example, around the south side of Lac Serre-Poncon, along the Ubaye valley to Barcellonette returning over the Col de Vars to Guillestre. Alternatively, drive from Guillestre over the spectacular lunar landscape of the Col d'Izard and back via Briancon with its magnificent old town and military fortifications. To the east and south of Gap, one can also follow the 'Route des fruits and des vins' into Hautes Provence and combine this with a visit to Sisteron with its imposing citadel perched high on a cliff above the river Durance. We also highly recommend a visit to the Museoscope above the dam of Serre-Poncon, which provides a fascinating account of the construction of the dam and the ways in which it changed both the local landscape and the lives of the people of the Durance Valley.
