The Vague de Rabioux just below the village of Châteauroux, is renowned as one of the Durance's main challenges. If you are interested in taking lessons the tourist information office can help you. Or go to the kayak and rafting centre at St Clement.

White Water Rafting – for an experience not to be missed take a trip from St Clement down the river to Embrun and ride the Vague de Rabioux en route.

Skiing
In winter the nearest ski station is at Reallon (www.reallon-ski.com) about 20 minutes’ drive up behind Chorges. Other, larger ski stations within an hour’s drive from the apartment include Les Orres above Embrun and Rissoul/Vars above Guillestre. Puy St Vincent, Serre Chevalier and Orcieres-Merlette are just over an hour’s drive away. There are numerous small, local ski areas in the Queyras which also provide opportunities for cross country skiing making the apartment a great base from which to sample a huge variety of different ski terrains. The skiing is high, beautiful and varied, catering for all levels of experience, with splendid views of the highest peaks of the Southern Alps. Other winter activities include snow shoeing and ice diving.

Culture and History
If you would prefer to sample the history and culture of the area, the historic town of Embrun is 25 minutes by car. It is also accessible by train and has a good selection of supermarkets, shops, cafes, hotels and restaurants. Walk through Embrun's narrow Italianate streets and admire the views from the ramparts across the River Durance to the mountains beyond. The beautiful 12th Century Cathedral is also well worth a visit. Embrun's Saturday morning market is very popular.

Other places of historical interest in the area include the tranquil Abbaye de Boscoden, the Fort of Mont-Dauphin near Guillestre, Chateau Queyras near Ville-Vielle in the Queyras Regional Park and the towns of Gap, Briancon, Barcellonette and Sisteron. There are also some beautiful circular drives which take in many of these places: for example, around the south side of Lac Serre-Poncon, along the Ubaye valley to Barcellonette returning over the Col de Vars to Guillestre. Alternatively, drive from Guillestre over the spectacular lunar landscape of the Col d'Izard and back via Briancon with its magnificent old town and military fortifications. To the east and south of Gap, one can also follow the 'Route des fruits and des vins' into Hautes Provence and combine this with a visit to Sisteron with its imposing citadel perched high on a cliff above the river Durance. We also highly recommend a visit to the Museoscope above the dam of Serre-Poncon, which provides a fascinating account of the construction of the dam and the ways in which it changed both the local landscape and the lives of the people of the Durance Valley.
