Local Attractions

'Area of Normandy Within Easy Reach'
All kinds of attractions and places of interest both free of charge and at a cost within easy reach of Le Moulin des Hiboux. Sample some of Normandy's delights both cultural and more relaxed - make your stay in Normandy a holiday to remember. Tourist Offices (Office de Tourisme) are always worth a visit for up to date information on local events.

'Bayeaux and Arromanches'
See the Bayeaux Tapestry dating back to the 11th century telling the story of William the Conqueror's conquest of England. Bayeaux also has the largest British and Commonwealth World War II Cemetery. Visit Arromanches where you can see the remains of the huge "Mulberry Harbour" off the D-day gold beach used to land thousands of men and material during the Battle of Normandy. See the 360 degree cinema which tells the D-day story. Enjoy the beautiful beach.

'Beaches'
Several lovely wide sandy beaches less than an hours drive from your gite. Collect shrimps, cockles, crabs - build a sandcastle - bbq or picnic. Try Carolles plage, Jullouville, Granville - Enjoy!

'Biscuiterie de l'Abbaye - Biscuit Factory '
Free tour of the biscuit factory with free biscuit tasting at Lonlay 'Abbaye. About one hour but really quite interesting. Available all year round. Closed for lunch midday until 1.30pm. Typically French eh!

'Cycling in Normandy'
Le Moulin des Hiboux is less than 2 kms from the Normandy Greenway Cycle Route which stretches from Cherbourg in the north to Mont St Michel (230 kms/143 miles). Consider stage 5 or part of it from Mortain to Ducey (29 kms) traffic free following the route of the now closed railway lines. Bring your bikes or hire locally by the day or longer at Cycle Prieur, Route de Vire, Le Neufbourg (Mortain) or from Cap Loisirs location, 11 rue de la Vieillardiere, Parigny (10 mins from gite).

'D-Day Landings 1944'
Visit Omaha and Utah beaches, Pointe du Hoc and the U.S. parachute forces landing sites - St Mere Eglise where there is an effigy parachutist hanging by his canopy from the church tower. Museums and memorials tell the story. Modern history first hand. See the U.S. forces Cemeteries at Colleville sur Mer and nearer to your holiday gite at St James (signposted from St Hilaire) prepare to be moved by these poignant and thought provoking places.

'Mont St Michel'
The second most visited attraction in France after the Eiffel Tower in Paris - visit "the island" Abbey and town - step back in time and enjoy this stunning place - arrive as early as possible and savour the atmoshere before the coaches arrive and the narrow streets become packed. Climb to the Abbey, visit and wonder!

'Mortain'
A few minutes drive east of Le Moulin des Hiboux this small town is well worth a visit. See the charming "Petite Cascade" via a relaxing walk and "The Grand Cascade" a little more demanding but well worth the effort. The Abbey Blanche can be visited (Tourist Office for details) and the "Petite Chapel" at the site of one of the epic battles of World War II where American Forces were surrounded by the counter-attacking Nazi Army for several days before being relieved - U.S. Memorial and information at the site.

'Parc d' Attractions Ange Michel (fun park)'
Near the village of St Martin de Landelles this a great place for "children" of all ages. check out - it's not Disney but it's not Disney prices either - take a picnic and enjoy!

'St Hilaire du Harcouet'
This charming traditionally French town is well worth a visit particularly on a Wednesday morning for the market. One of the largest and most lively in all Normandy. Street vendors of crepes, galettes, sausages with baguettes and every kind of stall selling all kinds of products. Don't miss the day old chicks and poultry in the town square. See the Cathedral, the Museum, and the parks and open spaces with lakes and footpaths. Call at the Tourist Office near the fountains.

'The Battle of Normandy '
See modern history first hand by visiting Normandy. In particular see the "Petite Chapelle" battle site (10 minutes drive from Le Moulin des Hiboux) where U.S. forces fought a heroic battle against a massive German counter-attack at Hill 314.

'Villedieu les Poeles - Copper Town'
Lovely town "God's Town of the Saucepans". See the Copper Workshop, The Bell Foundry, Museum of Copper and Lace and The Museum of Norman Furniture. Stroll around the town and maybe buy original handmade copperware.

'Waterparks and Swimming Pools'
Indoor and outdoor pools, slides, chutes, fountains - loads of fun at Aquavire - Vire and Aquatis - Fougeres (also the huge medieval castle at Fougeres is well worth a visit). At both Mortain and St Hilaire there are municipal swimming pools with the Mortain outdoor pool open throughout the summer season.

'Zoos/Animal Parks'
Try Zoo de Jurques - North of Vire near to Junction 42 on A84, or Zoo Champrenus - near Villedieu - Junction 37 on A84, or Alligator Bay - Beauvoir - 5 minutes from Mont St Michel.
