A Beautiful Old Water Mill in the Dordogne Countryside
Le Moulin dates back to 1429 and operated as a working water mill until the last century. Today, this historic water mill in the Dordogne countryside offers a unique and peaceful holiday setting, surrounded by lush greenery and the gentle sound of flowing water. At the bottom of the garden sits Le Petit Moulin, complete with its original sluice gate controlling the two streams that run through the property.
Set deep in the Dordogne countryside, the house enjoys a tranquil and private location. The nearest village, Mareuil (5 km away), provides everything you need, including three boulangeries, a butcher, supermarkets, and an excellent regional wine shop. There are also a couple of cafés, a beautiful old church, and an ancient castle ruin. Market day takes place on Tuesday mornings. The charming town of Brantôme is nearby and well known for canoeing on the River Dronne.
The House & Facilities
The house comfortably sleeps eight guests across three bedrooms and includes two bathrooms plus an additional toilet. There is a spacious open-plan kitchen and dining area, a large sitting room, a snug TV room, a garden room or conservatory, and a formal dining or hobbies room. Bed linen and towels are provided.
The atmosphere is romantic in the truest sense — a 15th-century mill with history embedded in its stone walls and the river flowing beneath. The rambling, bird-filled garden adds to the relaxed feel, and guests are welcome to take plant cuttings. Inside, you’ll find artwork, family photographs, well-stocked kitchen cupboards (simply replace what you use), and a bottle of wine waiting on arrival.
Children will love “the dorm,” which has four single beds along with baskets full of toys, books, and games. The main double bedroom offers a seating area and beautiful views over the river and garden. With generous living space downstairs in the kitchen, dining room, sitting room, and conservatory, the house never feels crowded.
Outdoor Living & Activities
Enjoy cycling through the quiet Dordogne lanes, walking across open fields and woodland paths, or simply soaking up the peace — you may not see another soul. Cool off in the natural pool behind Le Petit Moulin or fish in the stream as the stars appear overhead.
The nearest Horse riding is in Bourdeilles, and kayaking can be enjoyed on the River Dronne from Brantôme.
