La Cahudière – An ideal place to holiday together with family or friends
This beautifully renovated farmhouse sits in lush Normandy farmland. The house is situated on the edge of a peaceful valley near the Sélune Lake. Our two fully-modernised holiday cottages, created from a Normandy farmhouse, combine French tradition with contemporary living. The Gites can be rented individually or as a whole complex. It is ideal for large groups, families with children or groups of friends wishing to share their holiday accommodation.
We love the French way of life and we want you to love it too, therefore we aim to make sure you have the best possible time during your stay. With great attention to detail our Gites have been lovingly restored and maintained and provide everything necessary for a relaxing and comfortable holiday. We have spent eight years in France working and running our Gites so we are well placed to provide you with accurate and up-to-date information about the region.
Le Cocquelicot (Poppy) is a gite created from the old hay barn of an impressive Normandy farmhouse set in the beautiful countryside of tiny hamlet called La Cahudière.Thoughtfully renovated to retain its rural charm while providing high quality accommodation with all amenities this gite is an ideal place to stay in all seasons.
Le Coquelicot provides spacious living ideal for families, (sleeps 5 comfortably plus baby) or couples who prefer a little more room to stretch out. The gîte retains much of the character of the original barn with low ceilings and exposed beams, while the stone fireplace and wood burning fire ensure a warm welcome.
If you are after a larger 'Gite Le Bleuet' can also accommodate up to 14 so together the Gites can take groups of 19.
Poppy provides stylish, comfortable and well equipped accommodation including modern bathrooms and kitchens, microwave, dishwasher, DVD player, Satellite TV and WiFi available. Wood burning stoves and electric heating. Full laundry facility. Bed linen available. Furnished patios with BBQs. Villages, market town, bars and restaurants 2-6km. Fishing, fun parks, beaches, Mont St. Michel, historic towns, all within very easy reach.

Ground Floor: Lounge/kitchen diner
The lounge area has a large fireplace with log burning fire. Kitchen comprises fridge, cooker, microwave, sink and fitted units with ample work surface. The dining table will seat 8. One sofa converts to a double bed. French windows open at the front onto a tiled terrace.
First Floor
Bedroom One: Double bed; wardrobe/dressing space.
Bedroom Two: Full sized adult bunk bed, 1 single bed; wardrobe.
Bathroom: Full size bath with shower above, basin and WC.
Exterior
Your gite has a private furnished patio at rear with table and chairs to accomodate 8 people, sunloungers and a BBQ facility. It also has a log store for winter lets.
All guests are welcome enjoy the gardens and land around the house.
Pool
Our shared open air heated swimming pool is 7m x 3.5m and is surrounded by an attractive decked area so that you can sun bathe and keep cool all day long. The pool is normally available between the end of May and the end of September. If you are interested in exclusive use of the pool or want it available at any other time please ask us about it.
The pool has been built to all appropriate French safety standards and is registered as such. When in use life saving rings and safety poles are provided. The pool is in a secure area but we also recommend that children should be supervised at all times when using the pool.
Service
As with all self catering holidays we will leave you to get on with your holiday. We can provide laundry changes if required and the pool, when in use, will be maintained throughout your stay.
Cots, stair gates, baby baths, high chairs are all available on request and free of charge.

Safety around the Gites
In addition to all the pool safety features, all our Gites have fire protection and smoke detection devices. All soft furnishings comply with safety standards.
Smoking is not permitted inside the Gites but there are sand bins for cigarette disposal on each patio area.

Historic Normandy
The region’s buildings – half-timbered houses, Norman churches, grander abbeys and towering cathedrals – speak of the wealth which built them, The lush landscape of the interior is one of dairy herds and apple orchards where cattle graze the meadows to produce the creamy cheeses and butter for which Normandy is famous, while innumerable bees busy themselves pollinating the fruits which make cider and the Calvados (apple brandy).
The coastline is world famous. From the wide expanses of the Baie Mont St Michel with its impressive island abbey, with beaches of the Emerald coast reaching to via Cancale to the walled City of St Malo. Heading north up the rugged Cotentin Peninsula are the sweeping headlines around Arromanches and Caen, areas that witnessed the D-Day landings, when Allied troops set out to liberate France and end the Second World War.
There is so much to see within easy reach of La Cahudiére. Visit the mediaval towns of Fougeres, Vitre, and Dinan. The coast offers you Granville, Cancale and St Malo and a little further afield the Bayeux tapestry, war museums at Bayeux, Caen, St-Mere-Eglise, Avranches and Cherbourg and the war cemeteries – one close to La Cahudiére at St Jame’s – one of the American war cemeteries.
The Norman coast has also inspired great artistic flowering during the 19th century as chic resorts grew up along the Cote Fleurie at Deauville, Trouville and Cabourg, where Proust based his famous A la Recherche du Temps Perdu. Eugene Boudin, known for his Impressionistic seascapes, was born in historic Honfleur and Claude Monet moved there in 1864, mixing with the likes of Corot, Renoir, Pisarro and Cezanne. Inland, Giverny is one of Normandy’s most visited sites, home to Monet’s famous garden.
Local Attractions
La Cahudiére offers you a rural retreat with only a half hour drive to a range of magnificent beaches. If site seeing is your thing then there are lots of choice including the historic landing beaches. More local (10 minutes by car) is L’Ange Michel a leisure park that proves a great success with our younger visitors. The lake nearby provides opportunities for boating and fishing. Just leave a little time to sample the local produce. Restaurants and weekly farmers markets will enable to you try the delicious local produce; cider, cured meats and not to mention cheeses!
Markets
One of the biggest markets in the area is in St Hilaire on a Wednesday morning. It takes over most of the town centre. The market begins about 9.30am and is packing up by 12.00 noon. Here you can buy everything from a rabbit to a Renault. Of particular interest to some is the selling of livestock by locals,
Avranches, Fougeres and Rennes hold markets on a Saturday morning. All these are within an hours drive. These markets wind their way through the narrow streets giving it a wonderful atmosphere.
Local Picnic areas
Pont de la Republique
Just down the lane from La Cahudière (10 minutes walk) is the Bridge of the Republic crossing over the Selune Lake. On the far side of the bridge is a picnic area by the water. Just turn right at the end of our lane and stroll down the hill.
Pont des Biards
At the Biards bridges there is a viewing spot. (10 minutes by car) Its offers a beautiful view of the lake. It is possible to sit on the rocks by the lake.
Barrage de Vezins
The barrage is the hydroelectric dam that has created the Selune Lake. 15 minutes by car brings you to the barrage and the picnic area by the lake. There is a parking area and toilets.
La Mazure
La Mazure is an outdoor centre on the edge of the lake. There is a covered area by the side of the lake for picnics. In season, a small shop sells ice cream, drinks etc. There are plenty of activities here. You can hire canoes and boats to take out on the lake.
St Hilaire Park
In the centre of St Hilaire (15 minutes by car) is a beautiful park with two adjoining lakes. There are picnic tables here and plenty of activity equipment for children. Crazy golf is available with clubs and balls for hire from a nearby bar, a sign gives details.

There is a new swimming pool in the town situated close to the Le Clerc Supermarket petrol station. It is on the road situated at the side of the petrol station.
Mortain
This is an open air pool which is heated and a favourite of visitors.
Avranches
Aqua Bay. This is a modern and well run water centre. There are two pools, one for young children and full sized adult pool. There is also a water splash tube.
