Local Attractions

There are local shops within a short stroll and include a boulangerie, patisserie and delicatessen. The local gastronomy is a delight and there are several excellent places to eat, ranging from a very good creperie, pizzeria and several waterfront restaurants to the Michelin-starred Marine Hotel. The nearest large supermarket is at nearby Barneville, together with a large poissoinnerie. There is a popular weekly market at Carteret and at Barneville, with markets at other local towns throughout the week. There is a bank and Tourist Office less than 5 minutes walk from the apartment.

The apartment is well located for exploring the wider Cotentin Peninsular, with lots of good local walking to suit most tastes. Carteret's twin town Barneville is 5 minutes away by car or a picturesque bike ride takes not much longer. Ferries to Jersey (22km southwest of Carteret) run from Carteret's Gare Maritime or Portbail April-October.

Carteret’s waterfront is a short stroll from Le Castel Flore; the harbour activity includes the comings and goings of passenger ferries to the Channel Islands, sailing yachts and trawlers unloading fish. At high tide, the estuary provides a clear stretch of water ideal for visitors to the sailing school.

Carteret’s spectacular beaches are warmed by the Gulf Stream and sheltered in summer. They have been awarded the European Blue Flag for water quality. The beaches offer great stretches of shallow water for children to play. A walk around the headland will take you to miles of deserted sands on the Plage de la Vieille Eglise (can also be reached by car). In the opposite direction, Barneville-Plage is popular with French families, with plenty of water sports on offer.
Good for cyclists and also kayaking enthusiasts.

Be sure, if you are willing to go a little further, to explore the D-Day Landing beaches, Bayeux and Mont St Michel. There is a good public swimming pool a short drive away and an excellent aquatic centre near Cherbourg.

Carteret is an easy 30km drive from Cherbourg. The ferry crossing from Poole or Portsmouth takes approx 2½ hours by catamaran and 4½ hours by ferry. You can also drive from Caen or Le Havre.

For small children - sandy beaches, shallows for paddling, nearby merry-go-round during the summer, tourist train rides to Portbail once a week, aquatic centre with slides near Cherbourg, indoor swimming pool at Les Pieux including baby pool.
