Welcome to House La France, comprising two apartments available for holiday rentals. House la France overlooks the Orbieu River in the beautiful listed village of Lagrasse. Easily accessible and just a short drive from Carcassonne, Toulouse, Perpignan Montpellier and Girona airports. Also Narbonne, the Mediterranean, Collioure and even Spain and the Costa Blanca.

Swim in the river, go for a leisurely walk in the hills, a bike ride, sample oysters freshly plucked from the sea, or simply relax on the terrace and watch the sun go down. The Abbey Sainte Marie d’Orbieu, the origins of which date back to the V111 century, is just one of many attractions of this lovely and unspoilt village in an area steeped in Cathar history.

There are six restaurants, two bars, an Epicerie, a Boulangerie, Pharmacy, Post Office and numerous pottery shops and galleries, all only a short walk from the front door as is the medieval (X1V century) covered market square where we have a weekly market selling a range of delicious organic and local produce including cheese, olive oil, fruit and vegetables, bread and more…

THE TERRACE APARTMENT:

The large Terrace Apartment has an enormous (90 square meters) sunny terrace and looks out over the river, the Thyme, Pine and Rosemary scented hills opposite and the iconic hump back X11 century bridge. Simplicity, Elegance, Calm. With these words in mind we have created a beautiful, spacious three-bedroom three-bathroom apartment of approximately 120m2 (1300square feet).

Each of the 3 bedrooms has en suite facilities. One of the bathrooms has a deep roll top bath. The apartment also has under floor central heating for winter breaks. The main living area opens onto both the river and courtyard, with two of the bedrooms also overlooking the river. The fitted kitchen has French doors opening onto a private terrace of 15 square meters and looks into the courtyard.

The space has high ceilings and a very tranquil atmosphere. All the furnishings and doors are hand picked antiques, each reclaimed or custom made to suit the space. A flat screen TV with, DVD player and stereo with Bose Bluetooth speaker are located in the living area. Broadband WiFi is available in most parts of the building. Climb a short spiral staircase to the magnificent main terrace of 90m2 (970 square feet).

This terrace overlooks the river and the medieval bridge yet provides privacy. Half covered to provide both sun and shade, the terrace is equipped with a BBQ/Plancha, a sink, a cold-water shower for those hot steamy days, recliners and a large dinning table. It provides a perfect place to spend either day or evening. The sun sets directly opposite. Access to the river is also available through the courtyard for those wanting to paddle or explore the riverbank and garden.

Local Attractions

Situated in the wild and beautiful Corbières Hills on the banks of the river Orbieu and known as ‘one of the most beautiful villages in France’. Lagrasse is both an inspiring and relaxing place to visit. Famous for its Benedictine Abbey, founded in 799 by Charlemagne, its picturesque covered market, the 12th century hump back stone bridge, and its labyrinth of medieval streets. Throughout the year Lagrasse village and surrounding areas offer a variety of places to explore and many things to do.

Lagrasse is ideally situated to experience local culture, sample the cuisine and the abundant wines of the area. Once the home of the Cathars the region is steeped in rich and mysterious history. Only a short distance away is the wonderful medieval cité of Carcassonne, the Cathar castles of Queribus and Peyrepertruse and the Abbey Fontfroid with its beautiful gardens. The vibrant cities of Montpellier and Toulouse are also within easy reach. Only 40 minutes from the Mediterranean beaches you could spend the day windsurfing, sailing or sampling fresh oysters and sparkling wine from Limoux (the original French bubbly!).

Those with an appreciation for nature and art may wish to explore the Sculpture Trail, a wonderful walk through the hills amongst a diverse and eccentric collection of sculptures made of many differing mediums. Collioure the famous Fauvist centre or the Museum of Modern Art in Ceret is only about 90 minutes drive away. The beautiful Medieval villages of the Costa Brava in Spain, old Girona and even Barcelona are further exciting places to explore and also easily accessible.

Alternatively, take a trip into the dramatic scenery of the Pyrenees or cruise the Canal du Midi, go cycling (there are bikes on site which may be available for you to borrow and there is a very convenient bike hire right next door), walking, horse riding or, simply relax on the beautiful river terrace.
