Local Attractions
The island is a long sliver (30 km) of golden sands, rustling pine forests, neat vineyards and glittering salt flats. It has been joined to the mainland by a sweeping bridge since 1988. In spite of the changes this has brought, and the inevitable influx of tourists, the island retains much of its quiet charm and refreshing authenticity.
There are ten villages to explore: Rivedoux and Sainte-Marie/La Noue in the south, La Flotte, St Martin, Bois-Plage and La Couarde in the centre, and Ars, Loix, St. Clément and Les Portes further to the north. The best way to see the island is by bike - there are at least a couple of hire stores in each village - and set off with no particular plan in mind. The villages are not more than a few kilometres apart, so you if you start flagging, just look for the nearest bistro, bag your table in the shade and enjoy a glass of something cool!
In a nutshell, pottering is what the island is all about. Doing nothing in particular is the highlight of a holiday on the Ile de Re: sit on the beach and watch the waves, wander round the pretty alleyways of the whitewashed villages and just revel in the freedom of having nothing on the agenda!
