Village House in Entrecasteaux, Cotignac Area - Var, Provence
This delightful 17th century village house is simply decorated and furnished with an airy and open feel. The floors in the living rooms and the stairs have been lovingly restored using tiles matching to the originals, and the beams have been exposed in the main bedroom and the dining area. Original fireplaces and other fittings and details also remain. The kitchen and dining area are on street level, and a french window opens out onto the lower terrace overlooking the river and the forested hill on the other side. Here there are chairs and a table for outside dining. The living room and a bathroom, which also has a washing machine, are on the first floor and the bedrooms and another bathroom are on the second and third floors. Also on the third (top) floor there is a second, cooler terrace under the eaves.
Because the rooms are large and run right through from front to back of the property, the light floods in from both sides creating a feeling of space and fresh air. The cobbled street is a cul-de-sac for vehicles and so very quiet. At the back the soothing sound of the running water from the river adds to the relaxed atmosphere.
Note, because of the winding stairs, the house would not suit anyone with limited mobility or small children.
An ideal location from which to explore the beautiful area of Provence.

Local Attractions
Entrecasteaux is a beautiful old Provencal village, situated on the River Bresque. The whole of the old village is classified as an historic monument, and the houses and other buildings are very picturesque. The chateau stands on the site of an 11th century fort and was built in the 16th century, then modified in the 17th and 18th centuries.
There are several good restaurants in the village, and also a bakery, a grocery and a news agent. Bar Central opposite the castle is the place to be for morning coffee, evening aperitifs and everything in between.
Famously, there is also a cricket club, which is very active and welcomes visiting teams to play against.
During the summer there are lots of events taking place in Entrecasteaux itself, but there are also plenty of others in Cotignac, Carces, Salernes and Lorgues.
The forests are now wonderful to walk in, and smell gorgeous as they contain wild herbs as well as wild boar (very shy and only aggressive if disturbed with young).
Views from the surrounding hills provide a spectacular and unique flavour of "La Provence Verte"
All the villages around are also pretty with many traditional parts. The landscape is of rolling hills. There are many vineyards, olive groves, and lavender fields locally, and the forests were once used for firing the kilns to make the beautiful ceramics with which the area is particularly associated. The Terra Rossa Museum at Salernes is a good place to learn about the history of the ceramics industry. Markets take place in one village or another every day of the week, and you can buy local produce (olives, tapenade, wine, bread, cheese and seasonal fruit and vegetables) as well as imports from North Africa, just across the Mediterranean.
Entrecasteaux is also very centrally placed for day trips to the coast, to the extraordinary Verdon Gorge and the Lac de Sainte Croix, to Aix-en-Provence, Nice, Cannes or Saint Tropez, although the coastal areas can be very congested in the high season.
Local activities include horse riding, canoeing, cycling, walking (lots and lots of walks).
