Local Attractions
The large South facing terrace is a wonderful place to sit and watch life go by if you do not want to be out exploring the area. A local author, Martin Walker has based his books (Bruno, Chief of Police, etc.) on the town of Le Bugue, which he calls St. Denis, and many of the anecdotes about local people are very true to life, knowing some of the real characters we have around the town. Le Bugue itself has some lovely old architecture and it is worth wandering around the back-streets and alleys to absorb the warm ambience of the town. There are also several interesting caves on the edge of the town. The municipal swimming pool is open in the summer months, and there is a very active tennis club with both indoor and outdoor courts. There are a number of places where you can hire canoes and just float along either the river Vézère or the river Dordogne. The two rivers meet at the pretty village of Limeuil, 5 kms. away, and going out in a canoe is a very pleasant way to pass a few hours travelling through pretty countryside. In the summer months there is free live music around and about the town on many evenings, adding to the holiday atmosphere. In Le Bugue itself there is a well know Aquarium, and the village de Bournat, a living museum of older times. In Les Eyzies there is the world famous Museum of Pre-History, and in Montignac are the Lascaux caves.
Local activities include canoeing, cycling, hiking, walking, water sports, adventure playgrounds for children, aquarium, golf, tennis, horse riding, hot air ballooning, go-karting, exploring grottos and caves, and even eating and drinking! Canoe & bike hire are readily available. In July and August there are night markets in many of the surrounding towns and villages. These markets often have free live music and always plenty of local food to purchase and eat on the tables laid out in the market square. A super way to spend an evening amongst both locals and visitors since the ambience is always great.
For those who like visiting towns Perigueux has some splendid architecture, plus plenty of shops and alleyways to explore and...a good assortment of restaurants to suit all tastes and pockets. If you enjoy sampling nice wines then drive towards Bergerac where you can explore the vineyards of the region, including Montbazillac and Pecharmant.
We live locally so are on hand to provide any local information required, plus there are plenty of brochures for you in the house. Please Note: the house is Non-Smoking and pets are not allowed.
