The plateau on which Angouléme is situated was certainly occupied during the Bronze Age (2000 BC) and possibly as far back as the Neolithic era but occupation was occasional rather than permanent.
Towards the end of the 20th century, the old areas were rehabilitated and the town has a considerable fun of contemorary architecture: the Comic Strip Museum (CNBDI) designed by Castro and built between 1985 and 1991, the School of Image and Sound (LIS) designed by Morrisseau in 1989-90. The town has also adorned itself with murals that are now part of the urban landscape, depicting characters from the world of the comic strip thus reinforcing Angouléme's position as capital of that medium. There is a covered market. Law Courts built in 1826. Municipal theatre, St Pierre Cathedral, celebrated for its architecture & sculptures. Fine Arts Museum. Le Jardin Vert, a delightful green space close to the 13th century ramparts. St Cybard's Grotto. The Paper Museum. The beautiful meandering River Charente runs through Angouleme and relaxing river trips are available. There are numerous boutiques and hypermarkets to discover.
