Local Attractions

MIREPOIX(50 mins via Lavelanet) is a delightful Medieval walled town largely unspoilt with an interesting lace market on Mondays.

FOIX (50 mins)is a pleasant historic town with a well preserved castle and plenty of open air bars and restaurants. Spectacular cave trips nearby.

QUILLAN(30 mins)is a pleasant regional town, market day Wednesdays. A circular trip we enjoy:- drive to Quillan down the main road, when leaving Quillan head out in the Perpignan direction (impressive drive through gorges), if it's lunchtime, stop at Restaurant du Ribenty,on the right about 5 miles from Quillan, then turn right to Axat through the spectacular Gorge de St. George. Follow the D118 to Gesse and turn right to Bessede de Sault, Aunat, Rodome, Espezel and back to Belcaire.Narrow and twisty road but picturesque.

CARCASSONE AND LE CITE (1hour 15 mins) Drive via Quillan and Limoux. Then follow signs to Le Cite. We recommend initially to take the train/tractor ride around the outside walls, the recorded commentary in several languages is quite good. Then strole though the narrow streets of this ancient citadel. There are plenty of restaurants, gift shops and exhibitions. There is a good Tourist Office in the le Cite where you can get details of trips on the CANAL DU MIDI.

PUIVERT (15 mins) has a Medieval musical instruments museum and a castle. The castle has a tower and four stories you can visit. In the chapel are some stone carvings of people playing medieval musical intruments that are replicated in the museum. (check opening times with T.I.). There is a snail farm where you can taste recipes. The swimming lake at Puivert is quite large with an imported sandy beach.

LOCAL RUN go up main road towards Ax les Thermes. At Camurac turn right to Comus (lovely remote mountain village) follow the hill through the village (its windy and steep) to the forest tracks. There is a plateau on the right with stoneage village remains.Carry on to X roads by some picnic tables. Follow the sign to the viewing spot (see our photo in the Gallery) Return to Comus and drive down into the Gorge de la Frau. This is part of one of the ancient routes linking the Cathar Castles of Montsegur and Montoillou. The gorge is famous for its butterflies.A picnic spot and turning point is 2 miles down. If not picnicing return to the top where you'll see Le Silence du Midi, a bar/restaurant run by a Belgian couple (some English spoken).

LONGER RUN go towards Ax les Thermes. Just after the Col du Chiola stop at the Tourist Information Board and walk to viewing point. About 0.5 mile but really worth the effort for the panoramic views across to the Pyrenees peaks. Go on to Ax which is a spa and ski centre. The public naturally heated spa pool in the centre is lovely for the feet. There is a thermally heated swimming pool,Turkish baths, Roman baths and Sauna. There are various jets to massage feet, shoulders, back etc. There are several cafes for lunch. Cable Car trips up to ski centre from town run all year (see our pictures in the Gallery). Next drive down the main road towards Foix. After about 7 miles follow the signs to Lordat Castle. There is usually a raptor flying display at 3.00 but check with T.I. You can return the same way or you can go on from Lordat on the D20 which meets the Belcaire road beyond Chiola. There are two recommended walks from Lordat for the energetic and several starting from Ax les Thermes.

THE REFUGE DU MACQUIS DE PICASSOL This is a hut built by the surviving members of the local Maquis (wartime resistance) in the early 1990's as a memorial to their less fortunate colleagues. Very simple but quite moving. Follow the road towards Bellesta and there are signs into the Foret du Picassol. Follow the forest tracks that will take you within 200yards of the Refuge. You could drive on from here to Bellesta and the Castle of Montsegur---the last bastion of the Cathar movement and scene of a horrific 13thC massacre. Steep walk to the castle from the c.p.

ANDORRA under 2 hours via Ax les Thermes.

THE MAISON DE MONTAGNE, on the right just before Espezel, often has exhibitions that are worth a visit.

LIMOUX--home of the local champagnes-crement and blanquet ---again lots of tasting opportunities. Quite an interesting riverside town.

CATHAR CASTLES

There are several Cathar Castles nearby. There is a well preserved castle at Puivert. The castle has a tower and four storeys you can visit. In the chapel are some stone carvings of people playing medieval musical intruments that are replicated in the museum in the village. (check opening times with T.I.). At Chalabre there is castle where they re-enact Medieval jousting –again check with the T.I. At Lordat Castle (just beyond Ax les Themes) there is an eagle flying display some afternoons.

Foix castle is very well preserved and worth a visit. Foix is a charming town with lots of opportunities to sit and watch the world go by.

The famous castle at Monsegur is worth a visit. Keen walkers can walk there from Comus (about 10mins from Belcaire by car) through the Gorge de Frau along the Sentier Cathar--part of one of the ancient walk routes joining the Cathar Castles. You will need someone to pick you up at the other end while those who prefer not to walk can go round by car and meet up there. It is about 40 mins b

Sitting on the patio and sipping some chilled wine and reading a book!

WALKING
There are many beautiful way-marked walks in the immediate locality to suit all abilities. Remoter High Pyrenean walks are within an hour's drive. The Book Walking in the Cathar Country gives circular or linear walks based on each Cathar Castle. The Sentier Cathar passes through the area. The nearest are Montsegur , Montaillou, Puivert and Lordat.
SWIMMING
The village has its own small freshwater lake where you can swim in July and August. A larger lake with a sandy beach is at Puivert about 15km away. Both have life guards in the afternoons. There is Pool Complex at Axat. A new thermal pool has recently opened in Ax les Thermes that is open all year.
WINTER SNOW SPORTS
The nearest downhill ski centre is about 10mins away at Camerac. Other larger snow sport resorts are at Ax les Thermes and in the Pyrenee Oriental area. Skiing and Snowboarding lessons are available. For the very energetic there is a cross country ski centre at Chiola about 15 minutes away. Enjoy wonderful Pyrenean views on the cross country routes (while you get your breathe back).
KAYAKING AND CANOEING.
Kayaks and canoes can be hired at various locations on the River Aude.
FISHING
River and lake fishing are available at several venues.
HORSE RIDING
The nearest riding centre is at Camerac although there are several riding centres in the area.
