Champagnol is well placed for people who wish to explore the bastide towns and fortresses of the Cathar trail.
Most days of the week there is an open-air market somewhere in the area.
The 'produits du terroir' of the Tarn include the celebrated Roquefort cheese - you can visit the caves - Gaillac wines, the rose garlic of Lautrec, hams and charcuterie from Lacaune, confit and foie gras de canard, and many more, all feted with their own festival.
Further afield, Carcassonne has a stunning mediaeval centre, while the coast can be reached in a couple of hours, and the Spanish border in around three.
The famous Gorges du Tarn lie beyond Roquefort, about an hour and a half's drive away.
In season there is horse-riding, swimming and pedalos for hire at the nearby lake. Tennis courts can be booked in Réalmont and there are three 18-hole golf courses nearby, the nearest being a Championship course approx 20 minutes away. The countryside is also very popular with walkers.
