The region is famous for its vineyards and most importantly its world known wines. The low lying area on the limits of the coastal plain Perigord Pourpe is located west of Perigord Noir and is the area around Bergerac. The greener and more undulating area of small villages, farms, streams and rivers is situated North of the department and is known as Perigord Vert . It is these two areas that have become a popular destination for British expats. The beautiful, yet small towns and villages such as Eymet, Ribérac, and Mussidan have a distinct traditional olde-worlde charm to them which promote a peaceful and relaxed environment compared to the hustle and bustle of urban life in England, or for that matter in big towns and cities anywhere. The Dordogne is a region that is rich in vineyards and fortified ‘bastide’ towns, with an extraordinary range of natural and historical heritage sites, fabulous scenic countryside, the beautiful Dordogne River, the famous gastronomy and wines of the Périgord.
