Haute-Corse holiday rental houses - Haute-Corse Villas

Haute-Corse is a French department on the northern part of the island of Corsica. The department is surrounded on three sides by the Mediterranean Sea and on the south by the department of Corse-du-Sud. The northern half of Corsica or Haute-Corse is as geographically diverse as it is beautiful. Cap Corse is the northern peninsula which boasts valleys, mountains, sandy beaches and spectacular views - which make renting a self catering Haute-Corse holiday villa a very enjoyable experience. To the west is the coast around Calvi, where crystal clear waters & sandy beaches are backed by the snow-capped peak of Monte Cinto. Between Monte Cinto and the sea is the fertile land of Balagne which gives way to the desert area to the east of the stunning Ile Rousse – what could be more tempting when you stay in a self-catering villa or house in Haute-Corse?

Bastia is the capital of the department and is located in the northeast of the island at the base of Cap Corse. Bastia dons a distinctly Italianate feel with the old port retaining much of its original authentic charm. It’s the second largest city on Corsica after Ajaccio. Bastia is also the principal port of Corsica and is famous for its wines.

During your holiday to Haute-Corse don’t forget to see the Museum of Corsica, the former palace of the Genoese governors - which now accommodates a museum of Corsican ethnography. The museum covers many topics: geology, flora, history, arts and folk traditions, contemporary art. Finally the fortress with its keep and its 16th century bell tower offers great views over the old port, Terra Vecchia, the mountain and the coast.

Breathtaking Calvi, on the northwest coast of Corsica is a major tourist draw. It’s also home to the parachute regiment of the French Foreign Legion! According to legend, Christopher Columbus supposedly came from Calvi.

Corte, the fourth-largest commune on the island, is based inland and is a major university town. Sites of interest include the Fortress (A citadella), the Museum of Corsica (Museu di a Corsica), and the University of Corsica (Università di Corsica).
