Self-catering Drome holiday rental homes - Chalets Drome

Drôme, a department in southeastern France, takes its name from the Drôme River. This department is part of the Rhône-Alpes region and its neighbouring departments are Ardèche, Isère, Hautes-Alpes, Alpes-Maritimes, Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, and Vaucluse. Search Rent-in-France for your ideal holiday rental chalet or apartment in Drome, the most southerly department in the Rhone-Alpes region. As a result it has a distinctly Mediterranean feel; enjoying fields of lavender, sunflowers, vineyards, lime & olive groves.

Drome extends east from the Rhône to the jagged peaks of the Vercors range, and to the softer southern mountains of the Baronnies, on the border with Provence. Valence, the capital of the department, stands on the left bank of the Rhône between Lyon and Avignon. The town provides the perfect base for your Drome holiday home and to access the spectacular gorges of the Ardêche and the dramatic peaks of the Alps, just a short distance to the north-east.

Nyons, one of the department’s major destinations, is a medieval, fortified town, with narrow winding streets. La Tour Randonne is a listed Romanesque bridge with a unique 43 metre long arched passage way. Located in the heart of Provencal Drôme, near Ventoux, and between the Rhone and the Alps – this is a must see during your holiday rental in the Drome. Nyons is synonymous with olives and apricots. Every imaginable olive-related product is produced here from olive wood & oil to 'tapenade' - a green or black spread of crushed olives and anchovies. It benefits from a spectacular climate - with sunshine all year long, the area is known as the Tuscany of the Rhône Alpes.

Medieval villages and castles dot this beautiful landscape. Drôme's most significant towns are Tain-l'Hermitage, surrounded by excellent vines, and Montélimar, synonymous with nougat. Romans-sur-Isère, a short way east of Tain and Valence, has long been renowned for shoes, with many boutiques selling cut-price chaussures by some of France's finest makers.

There is something for everyone whatever time of year you rent holiday accommodation in Drome, France. During the summer months there are lavender trails to follow, for the more adventurous mountain biking can be practiced throughout the mountainous area. During the winter months—skiing, cross-country skiing, and snow-shoeing—are all available when you visit Drome.
