Aube, France

Self-catering Aube holiday gites - houses Aube

Aube is a department in the northeastern part of France named after the Aube River. Aube is part of the region Champagne-Ardenne region. The geography of the Aube, with its chalky soil and undulating plain, is exceptionally well adapted to wine-growing, particularly the champagne that takes its name from the region. The river, the vineyard countryside, forests and hills all serve to offer an enticing visit to the Aube.

Troyes is the capital of the Aube and is located on the Seine river. Impressive half-timbered houses (mainly of the 16th century) survive in the old town today. Not having suffered from the last wars, Troyes has a high density of stunning and well maintained old religious buildings grouped close to the downtown area. With 9,000m² of windows – the Aube is the richest department in France for stained glass and rightly deserves the name ‘department of light’. Troy’s ten churches offer an exception religious heritage for visitors when you rent a holiday home in the Aube.

Brienne-le-Château is located 1 mile from the right bank of the Aube River and 26 m. northeast of Troyes. Napoleon Bonaparte was a resident of the town from 1779 to 1784 while he was studying at the military school. The military academy there today devotes a museum to Napoleon’s life.

Chaource is a famous French cheese produced in the Aube in the village of the same name. The cheese has been made since at least the Middle Ages. Cheese is still manufactured there, in a tightly controlled area in of the Aube.

The Clairvaux Abbey is located 15 km from Bar-sur-Aube, some parts of it can still be viewed.

Chateau of la Motte Tilly is a French chateau with perfectly balanced architecture. Its charming gardens and rich collections make this 18th century “country house” a remarkable and rare ensemble.

The Chateau de Bligny is one of only two chateaus in the region that has a champagne label. The chateau passed to Baron de Cachard at the beginning of the 19th century. Cachard brought winegrowing to the estate: earning himself the name of “gentleman winegrower”.
