HISTORY
This is the story of a man who had a dream. François Spoerry, originally from Alsace, he loved the sea. His dreamed of being in the Navy but failed because of his poor eye sight. He loved sailing and regularly went to Greece with his friends where he would complain that he could not moor up close to his holiday home.

So, it was from this moment on, that a different dream was born. The dream of creating the perfect seaside town. He dedicated the rest of his life making this dream become a reality. In order to complete this crazy project, he had to find flat ground and ideally a marshland. He was in luck, as the perfect location was up for sale in the 1960’s, in the heart of the Golfe of St Tropez. It was appreciated by fishermen but was heavily plagued by mosquitos.

François Spoerry had to fight for another four long years to obtain the building permit. In June 1966, the first houses were built. Within four years, the swamp became an interlacing network of peninsulas and canals, a mosaic of streets and squares which were the foundations of today’s Port Grimaud.

His dream went beyond a berth at the end of the garden, beyond the construction of a marina. He wanted a real community life. A community where everyone could get together, go shopping, dine and party… and this is what he achieved. There was a common house, yacht clubs, a cinema, a school & a church.

Today, there are about 2,500 to 3,000 houses, divided into a dozen different categories. Initially, there were fewer than 10 house designs for this seaside town. On the other hand, externally, no two houses are the same. The most sought-after homes are the fishermen’s houses. They are amongst the most spacious and are built on 2 or more floors.
