Local Attractions

Romagne was a Roman settlement and seven legions were thought to have camped nearby. The church is mentioned in 942 AD but built without doubt from the 11th century with baptismal font and alter in the 18th century and some fragments of wall paintings existing from the 15th century. Another buttress has recently been added to the South side of the round tower. The church forms the focal point of the village and opposite are the bar, the post office and mairie (town hall) and the dentist and doctor are nearby.

Romagne has a football stadium and the council provides tennis courts for use by the public. There are extensive signposted walks around the area which is flat and good for cycling. River and lake fishing are within a few minutes drive where you can catch large Carp, Bream, Pike, Trout, Rudd, Tench and many others and we can provide fishing tackle free of charge. Please contact us about permits and day-rates for fishing.

We are about five minutes drive from the famous Monkey Valley (Vallee des Singes) which is unique in France with many species of monkey and some endangered species including gorillas. A wonderful day out and well worth a visit by all ages. A thirty minute drive takes you to the medieval city of Poitiers with it's grand cathedral and the church of the Notre Dame with the famous carved facade. A large Sunday morning market takes place every week where you can buy just about anything. If you want to see crocodiles, snakes, or birds of prey we have parks dedicated to them in the vicinity.

If you would like to go further afield you can drive to La Rochelle for a day at the seaside or visit the islands of Re and Oleron. Cognac is less than 90 minutes away where you can visit the distilleries and sample the spirit! The fast train (TGV) to Paris from Poitiers takes 1h30 to 1h50 so a day trip to Paris is possible.

In the village square:
Saturday morning - fresh oysters
Friday evening - fresh chickens
