World War 1 French Battlefields

Verdun Battlefield today

The first World War, more often referred to as ‘The Great War’ was a global war originating in Europe that lasted from 28 July 1914 to 11 November 1918.

The first world war began in August 1914. It was directly triggered by the assassination of the Austrian archduke, Franz Ferdinand and his wife, on 28th June 1914 by Bosnian revolutionary, Gavrilo Princip. This event was, however, simply the trigger that set off declarations of war.

Where was the war fought?

The Western Front was the main theatre of war during the First World War. Following the outbreak of war in August 1914, the German Army opened the Western Front by invading Luxembourg and Belgium, then gaining military control of important industrial regions in France.

The total number of military and civilian casualties in World War I was around 40 million. There were 20 million deaths and 21 million wounded. The total number of deaths includes 9.7 million military personnel and about 10 million civilians.

French Battlefields today

There's a host of fascinating WWI Battlefields in France to visit and among the very best are the Somme battlefields, Verdun and Pozieres. Other popular sites tend to include Louvemont, the Lochnagar Crater and the Ulster Memorial Tower.

Tours of the great War Battlefields and military cemeteries are now very popular. From old soldiers to young soldiers, from young children to old men looking for long-lost family members.

Such was the scale of the loss of life, the number of people searching for fallen ancestors seems endless. There were many scenes of conflict on French soil during the First World War, the two deadliest being The Somme and Verdun battles. The British and Commonwealth lost more than 20,000 troops in the first few hours of the Somme battle.

The Battle of the Somme

The Battle of the Somme, also known as the Somme Offensive, was a battle of the First World War fought by the armies of the British Empire and French Third Republic against the German Empire. It took place between 1 July and 18 November 1916 on both sides of the upper reaches of the River Somme in France

The Battle of Verdun

The Battle of Verdun was fought from 21 February to 18 December 1916 on the Western Front. The battle was the longest of the First World War and took place on the hills north of Verdun-sur-Meuse in north-eastern France.

Where is the Somme?

The Somme Battlefields of WW1, France. The 1914-1918 battlefields of the Somme are located in the beautiful, rural landscape of the region of Picardy and the Département de la Somme. The River Somme flows through the Vallée de la Haute Somme (Upper Somme Valley) in the east of the Département.

Verdun

Verdun is a small city in northeast France, on the banks of the Meuse river. It’s known as the site of the WWI Battle of Verdun. Verdun's battlefields are marked by museums and memorials, such as the Douaumont Ossuary, with the remains of more than 100,000 soldiers. Northwest of the city is the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery. In the town, the huge Porte Chaussée gate was once part of the city's medieval walls

Visiting the War Memorials and Great War Cemeteries

As I have already mentioned, the Great War has become an attraction for many reasons. Although they are not tourist attraction tourists do visit, to pay their respects. There are, of course, guided tours and arranged visits by military groups, writers, politicians and so forth. Here is a great site with photographs of the battlefields as they are today.

For anyone with an interest in the Great War, the battles, its cemeteries and monuments, please visit our main website and search for self-catering accommodation in the battlefield areas.
