Iconic Paris
France is world renown for its food, wine, revolution and its iconic buildings and artefacts. Paris stands proud with its collection of museums, galleries, theatres, monuments and places of natural beauty.
For the visitors to Paris, there are some of the worlds most visited sites.
The Louvre: The most visited art museum in the world. By far the art largest museum in the world, it is also an iconic landmark. The Louvre is housed in the Louvre Palace. Although it was originally built as a castle by Philip II in the late 12th/13th century. Any visitor to Paris just has to visit the Louvre. You could also visit the other great art museums, such as the Musèe d’Orsay, Musèe de l’Orangerie and the Centre George Pompidou.
The Eiffel Tower. The symbol of France. Ask anybody to identify France using an iconic figure and the tower will come tops every time. The Eiffel Tower sits in Paris and was built between 1887-18189 as the entrance to the 1889 World’s fair. The tower is also the most visited monument in the world. For instance, in 2015 over 6.91 million people paid a visit to the Eiffel Tower. Standing at 1063 Ft the same height as an 83 story building, the tower dominates the Parisian skyline. I dare you to visit Paris and not be tempted to climb the Eiffel Tower.
More to Paris than meets the eye
Other Iconic Parisian places include the Majestic Arc de Triomphe. To give it its full title Arc de Triomphe de l'Ètoile (The Triumphal Arc of the Star) which sits at the western end of the Champs-Èlysèes and at the centre of the Place Charles DeGaulle. Designed in 1806 this iconic arc is a draw to te tourists.
Just when you think you’ve seen the best, the Notre-Dame de Paris hoves into view. The name meaning ‘Our Lady of Paris’. Thought to be the finest example of French Gothic architecture, this Catholic Cathedral was started in 1160 and all but complete by 2160. Desecrated in the 1790s during the French revolution the cathedral went on to be the site of the coronation of Napoleon I and the funerals of French presidents. If its architecture you like, this truly is a must-see.
12 miles southwest of the centre of Paris you will find the grand Palace of Versailles. Now a World Heritage site (UNESCO) the place was once the seat of the French Kings from 1682 until the French Revolution in 1789. Such is the popularity of the Versailles Palace, in 2017 there were more than 7.7 million visitors to the site.
Hs is just the start of what Paris has to offer the visitor. One week would not be enough time o get around even the most famous of the sites and monuments.
