THE FRENCH WINE REGIONS - RENTING SELF-CATERING HOLIDAY ACCOMMODATION IN THE WINE PRODUCING REGIONS OF FRANCE
If, like me, and countless millions of other people, you like a glass or two of wine with your dinner, you may or may not be familiar with French wine.
French wine is as different from Spanish or German wine as is the French language is from both. There are, by common consent, 5 major wine-producing regions of France, these are the following:
- Bordeaux. Bordeaux, the hub of the famed wine-growing region, is a port city on the Garonne River in southwestern France. It’s known for its Gothic Cathédrale Saint-André, 18th- to 19th-century mansions and notable art museums such as the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux. Public gardens line the curving river quays. The Grand Place de la Bourse, centred on the Three Graces fountain, overlooks the Miroir d’Eau reflecting pool.
- Burgundy. Burgundy is a historical region in east-central France. It's famous for its Burgundy wines as well as pinot noirs and Chardonnay, Chablis and Beaujolais. The area is crisscrossed by a network of canals and studded with grand châteaux, some now luxury hotels. The capital, Dijon, of mustard fame, is home to the imposing Palace of the Dukes, where the distinguished Musée des Beaux-Arts was established in 1787.
- Champagne. Defined by a law dating from 1927, the area eligible to produce origin-approved (AOC) authentic champagne covers 34,000 hectares. The vineyards are divided into four large regions: Montagne de Reims, Vallée de la Marne, Côte des Blancs and the Côte des Bar.
- Loire Valley. The Loire Valley, spanning 280 kilometres, is located in the middle stretch of the Loire River in central France, in both the administrative regions Pays de la Loire and Centre-Val de Loire. The area of the Loire Valley comprises about 800 square kilometres.
- Alsace. Alsace wine or Alsatian wine is produced in the Alsace region in France and is primarily white wine. Because of its Germanic influence, it is the only Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée region in France to produce mostly varietal wines, typically from similar grape varieties to those used in German wine.
