FRENCH CHEESES ARE SO GOOD YOU CAN DO A CHEESE TOUR OF FRANCE

French cheeses are world-famous So much so, there actual guided tours of all of the best regions of France that produce cheeses.

Cheeses of France - French Cheeses by regions

So, let's talk about French cheeses.

French cheeses can be divided into three main categories These are the following;

  • pressed cheeses (like most British cheeses)
  • Soft cheeses, such as Camembert
  • Blue cheeses to which can be added a number of hybrids or very individual cheeses.

There are also three different types of milk used to make these cheeses;

Three different types of milk:
Cheese is traditionally  made from three types of milk:

  • Cow's milk
  • Goat's milk
  • Sheep's milk (ewe's milk)

Just to complicate matters even further, these French cheeses are also divided by origin. These are cheeses from the farmhouse (fromages fermiers) , or industrially manufactured cheeses.

If you are still with me on this intriguing topic then the cheeses are made even more distinct by their Labels:
These are traditional regional cheeses with an "appellation d'origine protégée"  (AOP) label (there are about 40 of these), traditional cheeses without an AOP label, and modern dairy-designed and produced cheeses.

Pressed Cheeses

These pressed cheeses are made using Cow's milk. Cantal, Comté, Beaufort, and Abondance, Emmental, Mimolette, (Tomme des) Pyrénées and Reblochon. Cantal is made in the Auvergne mountains, Comtè is produced in the Franche Comté region of eastern France, Beaufort, and Abondance made in a similar manner in the French Alps Emmental is produced in many areas of France whilst Mimilette is produced in the area of Lille in the north of France. (Tomme des) Pyrénées is produced, as you might expect, in the Pyrénées. Last but not least is Reblochon: A rich soft pressed cheese made in the Alps.

Soft French Cheeses

Brie Cheese. There are two sorts of Brie, Brie de Meaux and Brie de Melun. Other favourites are Camembert, Epoisses, Mont d'Or, Gaperon, Munster, Pont l'Evèque and Saint Nectaire make up the soft cheeses. The Brie cheeses are named after two towns that you can find about 50 miles south-east of Paris. Camembert hails from the Normandy region whilst Epoisses gets produced in Burgundy and the delicious Gaperon, semi-soft cheese from comes from Auvergne. Mont d'Or is produced in Franche Comté, Munster is a fairly strong rind-washed soft cheese from the Vosges mountains. Pont l'Evèque is a product of the Normandy coastal area south of Deauville. Saint Nectaire, this is a great cheese from the mountains of the Auvergne.

French Blue Cheeses and 'Other Cheeses'

Blue Cheeses: Bleu de Bresse, Bleu des Causses, Bleu de Gex, Fourme d'Ambert and  Roquefort. Include in the French cheeses are such delicacies as Goats Cheese, cheeses made from Ewe's milk as well as some modern dairy cheeses. These are

  • Saint Agur (a soft blue cheese, made in the Auvergne) ,
  • Brillat-Savarin (an almost buttery soft cheese... delicious, but watch the cholesterol...),
  • Roulade,
  • Saint Albray,
  • Port Salut,
  • Boursin (cream cheese with herbs and garlic).
  • Raclette

You can also add to this any of the local variations.

As you can see, that is a lot of cheese. Rather than delve too deep into the subject on this blog, you may like to read all about these French cheeses and their locations from this magnificent website; Aboutfrance.com
