Local Attractions
La Boheme is central for many attractions and activities. Here are just a few suggestions.

CARCASSONNE - Dating back around 2,500 years, and until 1659 an important defensive position on the border between France and Roussillon, the walled Cité of Carcassonne was saved from demolition in the mid 1800s, and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997.

THE CANAL DU MIDI - Built by Pierre Paul Riquet and opened to traffic in 1681, the Canal du Midi runs from Toulouse to the Etang du Thau on France's Mediterranean coast. Toegther with the Canal de Garonne, which runs west from Toulouse, it opened up a new route from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean, saving shippers the lengthy journey around Spain. The highest sections of the calan are supplied with water from the Lake of St Fereol, a dammed river near the town of Revel. The Canal du Midi has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996.

THE LAC DES MONTAGNES - A few miles from La Bohème, the perfect place to cool off on a summer's day. There's a sandy beach and lifegueards on duty in July and August, and restaurants and snack bars open in season.

CHÂTEAUX DE LASTOURS - Thought to date from the 11th Century, the four fortified structures high above the Orbiel Valley and the village of Lastours make up the most northerly of the so-called Cathar castles. This photos is taken during a 'sol et lumiere' performance, a dramatised history of the chateaux which can be seen on summer evenings.

THE MARKET AT REVEL - Said by many to be the best market in the south of France, a huge choice of local and regional produce is on offer at Revel's market every saturday.
