La Chenaie is on the edge of a designated National Park with clearly marked, relatively unchallenging cycling and rambling routes. The terrain on the plateau is ideal for gentle rambling and easy cycling, since there are no steep hills and little motor traffic - usually only peace and quiet.

But Savigné or Langeais are within 15 minutes pleasant rural driving time for supermarkets and general shopping: Tours and Saumur are within a 40 minute drive, also pleasant and rural, for anyone requiring more intensive retail therapy. Or there are weekly markets at Bourgueil, Langeais and Saumur, and an impressive [but quite expensive] daily covered food market at Tours.

The nearest airport is Tours, 45 minutes by car and serviced daily by Ryanair flights from Stansted and Dublin. The nearest TGV station is in Tours, about 50 minutes away, but linked by local trains from Langeais, only 15 minutes away by car, so guests can do Disneyland and back in one tiring day.

But it's absolutely necessary to have a car at La Chenaie, which, by road, is less than 3.5hrs from Caen or Dieppe and about 5hrs from Calais, much by motorway [about €30] until the last 45 minutes of country roads.

Of course there are the chateaux to see - but not all at once! There are about fifty of them within a range of five to fifty kilometres, some built for battle, others for fashionable living.

And there is history to enjoy - The Moors, in the eighth century, invading from Spain got as far as between Tours and Poitiers, where they were defeated by the combined Frankish armies of Charles Martel. In Medieval times, the ground on which La Chenaie stands was part of Anjou, for some time in the middle ages, controlled by English monarchs. Later, Leonardo da Vinci lived part of his life in Touraine, helping to shape the renaissance in France. The authors Rabelais [Chinon], Ronsard [Tours] and Balzac [Saché] all lived in the area, as did Descartes. Even later, the Loire marked a boundary between Occupied and Vichy France.

As well, nearly all the Touraine wine appellations - Bourgueil, Chinon, Saumur, St Nicholas and Vouvray are within easy reach. The wines of the area are less well-known in the UK than Burgundy or Bordeaux, but make excellent drinking. Vouvray and Saumur provide the sparkling wines, Bourgueil, Chinon and Saumur Champigny the reds, Sancerre and Touraine Sauvignon are very drinkable whites, with Coteaux du Layon, from Anjou, an impressive and relatively inexpensive white aperitif or dessert wine.

There is also a wide range of restaurants to choose from. Le Chaudron d'Avrillé offers a €14 4-course lunch including wine every day except Sundays - plenty of choice, and it has never disappointed. At the other end of the scale, Au Coin des Halles in Langeais or L'Aigle d'Or at Azay don't seek a star, but offer Michelin quality meals and service at very reasonable prices: a 3 course evening meal with wine for around 39 euros a head. Or you can try the Michelin star restaurants in the wider area - at least three. These five, and the wide choice of "in between" restaurants, all offer less expensive lunch time meals.
